A field study was undertaken to evaluate terminal residues of three fungicides including dichlofluanid, iprodione and metalaxyl as well as an insecticide, methomyl in a greenhouse growing green peppers. Each pesticide was foliar-sprayed twice or three times at 7-day intervals as applied with different timing of final application. Fruit and leaf samples of green peppers with various pre-harvest intervals(PHIs) were separately harvested and were subjected to the residue analysis. Dissipation rates of non-systemic fungicides, dichlofluanid and iprodione, were estimated to be faster in pepper fruits than those in leaves in which much higher residues were found, while iprodione persisted much longer than dichlofluanid in both portions of green peppers. Being variably observed in the level of terminal residues, the persistence of systemic metalaxyl and methomyl in fruits was comparable to that in leaves. Based on maximum residue limits (MRLs) of four pesticides established for fruit portions of green peppers, safe use standards for dichlofluanid, iprodione, and methomyl were successfully provided. Metalaxyl residues in pepper fruits collected within 7-day PHI, however, exceeded the MRL, far or possibly, and consequently no safe use standard should be proposed. Even though ten to thousand times higher residues of pesticides were found in pepper leaves, for which no MRLs are yet available, than those in fruits, it is considered that no serious risk would be resulted from their consumption as a supplemental food when compared with permissible dietary intake.
