Background Influenza causes significant morbidity and mortality in high-risk patients. Vaccination is the best preventative measure against influenza. The objective of this survey was to assess the level of influenza vaccine coverage, to understand the driving forces and barriers to vaccination and determine vaccination interventions for the following year. Methods Individual interviews and questionnaire survey were performed for adults of age ≥18 and they were asked about reasons for vaccination or non-vaccination and perceptions on vaccinations. Results 1,720 samples were collected and the coverage rate among general population was 34.3% while coverage in the high-risk group was 61.3%. Statistically significant predictors for vaccination were female sex, age over 65, vaccination in the previous season, experience of influenza-like illness and regular exercise. The most frequent reason for vaccination was to prevent both influenza and common cold while the most frequent reason for non-vaccination was thinking oneself healthy enough not to be in need for vaccination. This was also true in high-risk groups. Having more information on influenza and vaccination as well as doctor’s recommendation for vaccination was the most frequent option encouraging influenza vaccination. Conclusion Doctor’s recommendation was the most important factor in encouraging people to be vaccinated against influenza and they should be armed with precise information and actively encourage high risk population in order to increase vaccination rate.
