The western fairy tales to which we are familiar today were actually the folk tales that had been handed down orally with legends or myths, and gradually revised according to the local, social, and cultural characteristics. These folk tales were originated from the stories in many tribes or countries and had been well known by being written down. They tend to be regarded as a typical literature for children. The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault and The Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm, for instance, had been collected late in the 17th century and published in the middle of 19th century, and today are edited for kids and read by them. Fairy tales can be the indirect experiences through which children can socialize themselves, practice their actual lives, find their role models and their value system, and apply the models and values to themselves. However, many people, especially adults, who read fairy tales for their kids, are inclined to find fault with the stories because they suppose that children are so laking in judgment that they might accept the messages, particularly the gender stereotypes and the negative relationships between parents and children in the tales thoughtlessly, even though the fairy tales have had a favorable influence on children's growth so far. I researched the process of formation of The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault and The Fairy Tales of The Brothers Grimm, analyzed the gender stereotypes of heroes and heroines in Perrault's stories and the patterns of female characters in those of Grimm, inferred from the feminine images in the 17th and 18th century, and examined the influence of those images on modern society. I also analyzed the tales revised by modern feminists as the alternative of the traditional stories and suggested the desirable feminine images in modern society. In Western fairy tales, heroines are mostly beautiful, obedient, patient, and passive, while heroes generally take an active attitude on their lives with their own wisdom and courage regardless of their appearance. Thus, as children read the stories, they tend to accept the old-fashioned patriarchism unconsciously and misunderstand their gender role that men are active but women are passive. Specifically, the female characters in fairy tales are extremely divided in two parts : the main characters, the good and beautiful women are mainly the princesses or the queens, while ugly women are always vicious. Furthermore, in most case, the terrible female characters who bother the heros or heroines are stepmothers. Thus, we might wonder if these kinds of stories, which make us misunderstand the viewpoint on the relationship between men and women and between parents and children, should be received just as they are. As many writers recognized these kinds of problems, they started to revise the fairy tales to make kids understand female characters correctly. We call these "feminism fairy tales". We should help children to soundly understand the fairy tales that they like to read, and it is desirable for us to guide them to read the books which contain proper sexual identities and the features of positive step-parents. Furthermore, authors should also write lots of new stories that show kids the equality of both sexes. When children read these kinds of fairy tales with the help of the adults, they can correct the wrong point of view on the sexual identities and the prejudices from it.
