In the last chapter of Empire, Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt contend that Empire creates a greater potential for revolution, the multitude who are exploited by and subject to capitalist domination. In the sense that the multitude is the common name of the most repressed and the poor in the age of globalization, it calls our attention to another name of the marginalized, the subaltern. Gayatri Spivak proposes the word subaltern to encompass the disempowered individuals which disclose slight but significant differences from the multitude.Practically, the multitude and the subaltern connote the poor who are excluded, repressed, exploited in global capitalism. When it comes to undergo a shift to the spheres of their political project, however, their mutual differences and distances are strikingly revealing. Delving into differences between the multitude and the subaltern according to each part's political project is the primary aim of this thesis. Exploring differences between the two concepts, however, should not be limited to the affirmation of differences itself. In this sense, my thesis purports to comparative analysis which can enrich each concept by juxtaposing the multitude and the subaltern with their counterpart. The first comparative keyword is 'present'. The different approach to the present political project of the multitude and the subaltern results from a different understanding of the shift from imperialism to Empire, based on binary oppositions―first world and third world, center and margin. The multitude focuses on 'after' the passage to Empire grappling with the way of flight from Empire's control extended throughout social lives. The multitude's present means not only Empire's hegemonic control but also the multitude's resistant moment when they are separated from real subsumption of capitalism. In contrast to the multitude considering 'after' the passage mainly, the subaltern is related to the transitional stage from imperialism to Empire tracking on the material remnants of imperialism in the third-world. In this sense, the subaltern claims to remember their vanishing present which may be precluded from articulating their own experiences in the resistant present of the multitude. When the multitude's present means resistant one and that of subaltern vanishing one, what makes not only the multitude's present possible but also the subaltern's present not vanished is 'communication'. For the multitude communication is related to 'power to speak' and common desire of them and is understood as a premise to produce the multitude's resistant present. When it comes to the subaltern, however, communication itself is apt to be contaminated by and indispensably influenced by discursive mediation and power relations. Therefore, while communicability is the starting point of the multitude's resistant present, for the subaltern communicability is the final goal of their political project. The multitude situates politics on producing the resistant 'present' from their communication, ethics on the responsibility of reproducing this resistant 'present' continuously. For the subaltern politics is related to the representation of the subaltern's voice for communicability, ethics to the (im)possible encounter with the subaltern by cutting negative parenthesis incessantly. In this sense, the subaltern is a 'stain' which delays the completion of the multitude's resistant 'present', communicability. The subaltern can be said as an epistemic limit point which reminds the multitude's politics of (in)communicability. If the subaltern is considered as the moment of questioning the 'present' and 'communicability' of the multitude's resistance itself, this moment can be a necessary stronghold which contributes to the communication and cooperation of the repressed within Empire.
