This study, with task-based advanced-level textbooks on Korean as its objects among other textbooks published after 2000, aims to explore a methodology of developing tasks for effective speaking education by analyzing those tasks whose outputs yield speaking.Chapter 1 investigates the previous studies related to tasks and recognized that most of the studies are about principles of task development or presentation of methods. Also, we raises the necessity of dealing concretely with the discussion of a systematic analysis and evaluation of the tasks presented in the textbooks as it is an important process that provides a basis for textbook composition.Chapter 2 investigates theories about methods of speaking education required of the cultivation of communicative ability, and examines the theoretical background of the task-based teaching method that this study focuses on as a way of the fulfillment of speaking education among others. Also, we investigate what goals and properties the advanced level, in particular, among the whole levels of mastering has.Chapter 3 examines adequacy of analytical standards through a preliminary analysis, and then modifies and supplements them to be adequate to the advanced level before establishing the analytical standards. The objects of this study are the communicative tasks except the structural exercises from those tasks whose outputs yield speaking in the whole areas of advanced level textbooks. In case that numerous single tasks consist of a complex task, we divide them into individual units to analyze them.Chapter 4, based on Littlejohn’s stepwise analytical model, describes external compositional systems and general properties of each textbook, before starting our analysis.Chapter 5 analyzes speaking tasks on the sides of matters, communicative functions, types of cognitive processes, performance methods, developmental aspects, and input data. First, from the analysis of matters of the tasks, we can find out that ‘culture,’ ‘local society and the state,’ and ‘individual life’ occupy 80%of the whole subject matters. On the other hand, in the analysis of the matters by sub-items, it appears that routine themes and professional themes are dealt with comparatively colorfully. Second, from the results of the analysis of communicative functions, we can learn that detailed communicative functions are hardly dealt with except ‘the function of exchanging information or opinions.’ Third, ‘the task about opinion gaps’ shows the highest ratio in the analysis of cognitive processes, and in the analysis of performance methods, it proves that the most frequently used is the ‘sharing’method in which one speaks freely about a given topic. Fourth, as for the developmental aspects of tasks, we divides the tasks into the parallel type and the deepening type, and examines those examples of the aspect of task development that is constructed for an advanced learner to deepen his/her thoughts as he/she approaches professional themes step by step. Fifth, in the analysis of input data, it appears that each textbook shows different ratios among the monologue forms, dialogue forms, and discourse participants in written texts and spoken texts.Chapter 6, on the basis of the analytical contents of this study, suggests, as points of consideration in the composition of speaking tasks in an advanced textbook, that it should contain education of communicative functions, that it presents detailed expressions that can help advanced learners to perform tasks, that a systematic composition is necessary that helps learners to approach given professional themes step by step, and that we should enhance the practicability of texts as input data by specifying types of texts. This study finds its significance from the fact that it has recognized the importance of a systematic evaluation of the previous tasks that are important bases for task composition methods, and deals with concrete analyses of them. Especially, we think that this study is significant in that it provides basic data for speaking task development considering properties of the advanced level by examining on many sides the communicative tasks in advanced level textbooks, whose outputs yield speaking.
