Study on the mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion behavior of low elastic modulus new titanium alloys for biomaterials원문보기

Al and V elements in Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been reported to cause the cell toxic and bone loss by stress shielding effect due to large difference of elastic modulus value between low elastic modulus of bone(10~30GPa) and high elastic modulus of Ti-6Al-4V alloy(110GPa). Therefore, alloying elements of Ta, Nb, Zr or Sn replacing Al and V in conventional biomaterial alloys were devised to lower elastic modulus. Alloys with compositions of Ti-40Ta-10Nb-4Sn, Ti-40Ta-10Nb-10Zr, Ti-30Ta-10Nb-10Zr were prepared respectively. The micro structures, mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion behavior for these designed alloys were compared with that of conventional biomaterials, CP-Ti(Gr.2) and Ti-6Al-4V alloys, and its results are described below.
1. In contrast to the conventional biomaterials possessing α or mixed α and β phase, the single β phase was identified in all the designed alloys, and it was confirmed by XRD(X-ray diffraction) analysis.
2. In mechanical properties, all designed alloys, except for alloy with 30wt% Ta, showed excellent strength comparable to conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy. On the other hand, alloy with 30wt% Ta exhibited the maximum elongation among the designed alloys. The results obtained from hardness test suggested that all the designed alloys, except for alloy with Sn, have a higher hardness than the conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy.
3. In open circuit potential(OCP) test, the measured corrosion potentials for all of the alloys were shifted toward positive direction, and then reached a stable constant potential value in a short time. These results arises from formation of a protective passive film, which is generated immediately after immersion.
4. According to potentiodynamic polarization(PP) test, which can provide information regarding corrosion behavior of alloys, corrosion resistance of the designed alloy with Sn decreased significantly based on high values of corrosion parameters (corrosion current density, passive current density, corrosion rate). On the other side, designed alloys with Zr have shown excellent corrosion resistance owing to low values of corrosion parameters similar to conventional biomaterials alloys.
5. The corrosion behavior of designed alloys measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) test has revealed that corrosion resistance values is in good accord with the results of potentiodynamic polarization test. In this test, Rp(passive film resistance) value is inversely proportional to corrosion rate. Based on measured Rp values, the designed alloys with Sn possessing low Rp value resulted in decreased corrosion resistance, on the other hand alloy with Zr exhibited excellent corrosion resistance with high Rp value.
In conclusion, designed alloys in this study have excellent mechanical properties similar to conventional biomaterials, and also corrosion resistance was superior exclusive of alloy with Sn. Therefore, designed alloys with Zr were considered to have high possibility substituting the conventional representative biomaterials, Ti-6Al-4V alloy, for a biomedical field as non-toxic and low elastic modulus of titanium alloy.
