The present study purposed to investigate children’s private speech in their kindergarten life. Specifically it attempted to interpret the meaning of private speech to children by examining how children make private speech through their daily life in kindergarten and what the characteristics of their private speech are. With interest in how private speech is made in children’s life, we formulated research questions as follows. 1. How do children make private speech in their kindergarten life? 2. What are the characteristics of private speech made by children in their kindergarten life? 3. What are the meanings of private speech made by children in their kindergarten life? Based on the viewpoint of phenomenological research to these questions, we used Van Manen’s(1997) observation method, adapting it for the purpose of this study. This research was performed at Heemang Kindergarten, and the observation was carried out through the cyclic process of seating, problem setting, concentration on children’s use of private speech, data collection, data recording, data analysis, data interpretation and again problem setting. Participants in the research were 2 three-year-old, 3 four-year-old and 3 five-year-old children, so a total of 8 children and a class teacher. Observation was made everyday for around 25 weeks from March to August 2005. In addition, we had interviews with the participants from time to time and relevant literature was reviewed to collect relevant materials. In the process of data analysis, field data were sorted out to answer questions noted during observation and if the data were not enough to answer the questions, the participants were visited and observed again. Through the cyclic process, the researcher recorded all thoughts and answers to questions and selected terms were classified and categorized. In addition, their characteristics were compared and sequenced and, at the same time, data collection and analysis were continued cyclically. The results of examining private speech made by children in their kindergarten life are as follows. First, how do children make private speech in their kindergarten life? Private speech was observed in all of the children but they did not recognize the fact that they were using private speech. The utterance and contents of private speech made by children were different according to their activity from going to kindergarten to going home. As for the utterance of private speech according to their familiarity with the activity, private speech was not active when the children faced a new thing or explored a difficult thing. On the other hand, when they became familiar with environment and activities, they began to use private speech actively, rejoicing participation in the activities. However, when the environment and activities were internalized in the children, private speech became inactive again. In this way, the degree of private speech made by children in their kindergarten life showed the pattern of gradual increase and then decrease. In addition, all children at Heemang Kindergarten made private speech expressing their emotion frequently during their daily activities. They expressed their emotion frequently through private speech when they were dissatisfied, excited or amazed. Consequently, children appeared to make private speech continuously in their kindergarten life although the frequency of utterance and the contents varied. Second, What are the characteristics of private speech made by children in their kindergarten life? The characteristics of private speech in kindergarten life were ‘continuing and promoting’ activities or ‘interrupting’ them. In case private speech made by children in their kindergarten life was continuing and promoting activities, children participated in the activities actively or took interest in them and had smooth social interaction with others. On the other hand, when children’s private speech made was interrupting activities, they were passive in the activities, lost interest in and gave up them and, furthermore, interrupted other children’s activities. These results suggest ‘a method for teachers to support private speech,’ namely, what teachers do when children make private speech in their kindergarten life. In other words, if children make private speech continuing and promoting activities, they should be allowed to use private speech but, if they make private speech interrupting activities, the teacher should provide an appropriate help and guidance so that the children promote the disturbed activities by making suitable private speech. Third, what are the meanings of private speech made by children in their kindergarten life? Children’s private speech carried out cognitive functions of guiding, organizing and structuring their behavior as well as self-regulation functions of adjusting and planning themselves ‘emotionally,’ ‘inquisitively’ and ‘behaviorally.’ That is, children made private speech for desirable adjustment and successful accomplishment, for controlling their impulsive desire and urge, for distinguishing socially acceptable behaviors from unacceptable ones, and regulating their emotion, thought and behavior within the acceptable range. Through private speech, they got emotional comfort, endured frustration, conversed and accepted, concentrated on problematic situations, got encouragement and resolution, had imagination and play, gained the satisfaction of accomplishment, had recollection and rumination, and adjusted themselves to environment in a harmonious and flexible way. In consequence, they used private speech as a self-regulation tool to understand a certain problem or situation, to concentrate on the situation and to overcome difficulties. By analyzing children’s self-regulation through private speech, we can examine the deeper meanings of private speech and ultimately, by asking themselves the questions of ‘What help should be provided to children’s and ‘How should children be approached,’ teachers may recognize the importance of the self-regulation functions of children’s private speech. In addition, the present study is considered meaningful in that it subdivided the self-regulation functions of private speech found in previous research and analyzed them according to time, space, people and context to explain the process of self-regulation in children. As presented above, the results of this study may be used as basic materials for searching for other meanings latent in children’s private speech.
