This research was conducted to study and understand the "block-play" characteristics of infants through participatory observation of infants 1 year - old or younger. The questions of this study are as follows: 1. What are the "block-play"characteristics of infants 1 year-old or younger? 1-1. What are the general characteristics of block-play of infants 1 year-old or younger? 1-2. What are the characteristics during the course of Block - play of infants 1 year-old or younger? The subjects of this research were 16 infants aged 1 year or younger at the "K" day-care center located in the Kyong-gi province. Data for this research were gathered through participatory observation carried out 3 to 4 times a week from March to May of 2006. In addition, interview with the instructors, video recordings, photographs, and various documents were collected. Data was analyzed by classifying, organizing, and categorizing the data collected in observation logs, interview contents, video, and related documents from the day-care center. The key result of this research along with the question can be described as follows: The observation results of the "block-play"characteristics of infants can be examined in two parts. One being the general characteristics that can be seen in "block-play" and the other is characteristics that emerge during the course of "block-play". The differences in the general characteristics seen in "block-play" are the types of blocks used and the number of blocks used by the infants in "block-play"as well as the uninterrupted "block-play" time. Also, differences can be seen in the development level based on age of the infant. Infants mainly used "paper brick blocks", "sponge blocks", and others that were big in size and with few movements are easy to construct. If block types were compared by age group, younger infants, in terms of months-old, used big "coco blocks"among the construction blocks and the older infants used relatively smaller "lego blocks". In the case of the number of blocks used by the infants during play, it was observed that infants aged 19~24 months used more number of blocks than infants aged 12~18 months. In the case of uninterrupted "block-play" time of infants, infants aged 19 ~24 months partook in the "block-play" for a longer uninterrupted time than infants aged 12~18 months. Characteristics that arose during the course of "block-play" are categorized into "freely inquiring", "using it as a medium to fulfill a want", "repetition of same activities", and "using it symbolically". If we examine among the sub-category of "freely inquiring" among the infants' "block-play" activities, it can be classified into unintentional behaviors of "inquiries using the body"and "investigating the physical changes of the blocks". For the most part, infants sucked, rubbed, squeezed and grabbed the blocks with their body. Furthermore, the infants gained interest in the various physical changes of the blocks while participating in block play. The various situations that occurred during the infants' block play activities allowed the infants to not only gain knowledge on the characteristics of each material, the infant was able to learn and experience causal relationships. If we examine the "using it as a medium to fulfill a want" characteristic of infants' "block-play" activity, they fulfilled their physical urges dragging, pushing, and pulling the blocks all-around the classroom by using their bigger muscles to control the movement. In addition, to fulfill their desires to climb to higher grounds they frequently climbed on onto the blocks. They also fulfilled their emotional desires using the blocks. By throwing, stacking and destroying, kicking activities, they relieved their emotions. One of the characteristics that appeared during the observation of "block- play" activity was "repetition of same activities". The infants stacked the blocks, destroyed the blocks, and then stacked them again or they would lay out the blocks horizontally and connect the blocks continuously. During repetitive block play, the infants became familiar with the blocks and began to construct the blocks and progressed from the initial stage of making objects to constructing objects. From these activities, the infant acquired social knowledge and play skills which advanced to more symbolic play. Of the infants' "block-play" characteristics, "using it symbolically" was the most advanced form of "block-play"observed only in one year-old infants. Through stacking activities, infants constructed structures. Even though these structures were symbolic and in un-structured form, they would give it a name. Through "block-play" they converted to "make-believe play". At this "using it symbolically" stage, the infants used "block-play" as a medium to meet with infants of similar age. In the beginning of block play infants did not interfere and looked on passively but gradually took part in passively playing with other infants and later became more involved as they exchanged blocks with each other or played together with the blocks, as they transitioned from individual play to playing side-by-side. Also, with the appropriate intervention of instructor's mutual verbal application and the supply from the physical environment, although limited, advancement to a form of united play could be observed, and with the help of the instructor, the play converted from an unintentional activity to a goal-oriented intended activity. This kind of play provided the basis for symbolic emblematic activity for infants.
