Recently homeless women have become a social issue. This study primarily started with a doubt whether homeless women, surrounded by deep-seated homeless men, could seek their own safety. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to suggest that homeless women's sexuality should be regarded as a main social concern. In the patriarchical social structure where women's sexuality has been perceived as 'protected', street homeless women's sexuality seem to be treated as out-of-protection. Therefore, this study questioned about the meaning of sexuality and femininity that homeless women themselves think of and security of homeless women in terms of sexuality. The data of this study were collected through in-depth interview of sexuality homeless women. The questions used for the interviews were unstructured in order that the homeless women could freely speak about their life experience on the street. The eleven interviewees were selected from the shelter where I have worked as a social worker. All of the interviewees used to stay on the streets for a while in the past. The research findings can be summarized as follows: Firstly, the experience of street homelessness exposures women to arbitrary violences and makes them helpless. Street homeless women usually gain their livelihood by prostitution, and begging, collecting papers. The money they earn is used to maintain their minimal subsistence. Streets are frightening and terrible environments for homeless women. Frequently, they felt threatened and affiliated with extreme fear. That is particularly from the violences by homeless men. With the brutal street lives itself, homeless women have to put up with homeless men's violent behaviors. Secondly, when questioned about sexuality, homeless women interviewees have narrowly regarded sexual experience as penis-centered sex. Though homeless women have their own sexual desire, they 'voluntarily and subjectively' control and suppress it. Their continence seems to be closely related to the patriarchical system of the society. Thirdly, when it comes to the meaning of femininity in terms of chastity and pregnancy, they have considered chastity as a key to happy lives of women under the influence of sexual moralilty ideology. However, their realities have been quite the opposite; some of them had to unwillingly experience pregnancies and abortions. This study found that repeated unvoluntary pregnancies and abortions leaded homeless women to negative sexual perception. Fourthly, as for their sexual security, they often live through severe sexual harassment physical and psychological violence, and sexual violences. Nevertheless, they only passively defend themselves, being unaware of their rights to sexual protection. Their responses were from double standards of sexuality and the lack of sexual knowledge. Also, they tend to think that nobody would help them even when they ask help. They have thought that silence is the best survival strategy on the streets. This study explores that sexuality of homeless women is not an individual concern, but an important social issue which needs social attention and interest. It also finally provided some implication related to social policy and practices, suggesting various social welfare and programs for homeless women's sexual protection; drop-in centers specialized for homeless women; specialized medical care such as gynecologic services or psychiatric services with case management; anti-sexual violence measures such as sexual violence relief concealing for homeless women; sexuality education and safety systems for homeless women; active supports and concerns from Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and women's NGOs; women staffs for street out-reach; welfare networks between polices, public offices and shelters for the homeless women and so on.
