Art therapy is a new therapeutic measure to more easily approach and interpret human's mental world, and can gain greater effect, if it is used along with other treatment. People living in the complex modern times have various types of affective problems. In this context, it can be a natural phenomenon that the target of art therapy has been generalized. This study carried out a literature study and existing case study to find out the psychological possibility of art therapy through art activities, focused on a theoretical approach. To this end, Chapter I describes the need and purpose of art therapy research. Chapter II discusses the concept and merits of art therapy. In Chapter III, theoretical approach of art therapy, that is, Psychodynamic Approach Model of Freud and Jung, Phenomenological Approach Model, Gestalt Approach Model, Person-Centered Approach Model and Cognitive Developmental Approach Model are discussed. In Chapter IV, the diagnosis procedure of art therapy, art activities and general interpretation method of drawings are discussed. As a result, the following results have been obtained in this study: First, although there are difficulties to express in language by converting unconscious images into words in psychoanalysis, images can be expressed intact in art therapy. Second, defense can be maximally reduced. An unexpected image is expressed through a patient's work, because art is a less familiar communication method to most people, and therefore, art is not easy to control. Third, art can create visible shapes through making things objective: patients can have an easy access to their own emotion and thought, perceive that they exist in separation from those and that they can integrate those into the part of themselves. Fourth, because a patient's work permanently remains, distort of the patient can be avoided. Also, reviewing patient's work with the patient is very useful, and sometimes provides a new insight. The development and progress of therapy can be felt, and the patient can be encouraged by making the patient perceive the therapeutic development and progress. Fifth, art can express everything simultaneously, because art has spatial features. Art therapy is a supplementary technique to treat the confused patients in terms of affections, and is researched and applied greatly in other countries, such as the United States and Japan. The art therapy's target has also been generalized, and the development of the art therapy has been brought about; adequate programs are developed and applied. The development in line with our own culture and ideas is urgent, because human's thinking reacts to each culture differently, considering that human's thinking develops in adaptation with culture since childhood. We sincerely need an attitude to research with responsibility and firm belief under the reality that professionalism of art therapy is insufficient and confusing, and the leading force to actively lead art therapy lacks, given that the professional art therapist educational institutes have been just recently established.
