A school for the elderly is an educational institution providing lifelong education for the elderly to ensure their welfare and resocialization. It serves a dual function of providing education and opportunities for leisure activities, and it offers courses that are closely related to daily life. Demand for education for the elderly is growing due to an increasing elderly population and the arrival of knowledge-based society. In this regard, this study aims at reviewing theoretical foundation of education for the elderly, examining the current situation through survey, proposing points for improvement, and suggesting measures to develop systematic music education programs that take characteristics and levels of elderly students into consideration. This study was conducted with 14 music instructors and 263 elderly students of 15 out of 26 schools for the elderly registered in Seoul, Korea. Surveys composed by the researcher were conducted on them, and the collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.0. The summary of research findings is as follows: First, among 26 schools for the elderly registered in Seoul, 22 schools or 85% had music education classes. The types of classes offered the most were singing class, followed by folk song class and Janggu (Korean traditional instrument) class. Second, it was found that the majority of instructors who teach music classes at schools for the elderly were women (gender), in their 60s (age), and high school graduates (level of education). Also, in many cases, instructors' majors, types of certificates they have and types of classes they teach did not correspond, causing lack of expertise in classes. Also, they were found to have taught the courses for a long time as volunteers. Third, the majority of elderly students taking music classes at schools for the elderly were found to be women (gender), in their 70s (age), and elementary school graduate or under (level of education). Fourth, the current situation of music education and level of satisfaction of elderly students varied; they were more statistically significant in their level of education followed by age and location of a school. The differences in the current situation and the level of satisfaction according to location of a school came from external factors, such as size of the school, school facilities and classroom equipment, while the differences according to level of education and age came from internal factors, including students' preference for music classes, changes experienced after taking classes, reasons for taking classes, who recommended students taking classes, and whether students participated in music performance recital or not. In conclusion, the current situation of music education at schools for the elderly in Seoul and level of satisfaction according to background variables of elderly students operationally defined by the researcher were found to be statistically significant in part. With development of various music education programs and further research on the actual situation of schools for the elderly at the national level, it is believed that the elderly students will be able to enjoy higher quality education.
