The purposes of this study are to investigate the conception of the fifth and sixth graders of elementary schools on state of matters and change of state to understand their levels of conception formation and to analyze the cases of major misconception to find out desirable teaching methods. The subjects of this study were 231 children who were fifth and sixth graders in four elementary schools located in the City of Daegu. The questionnaire for testing consisted of 22 questions, and the content validity was confirmed twice by two experts on science education and six teachers who specializes elementary science education. The content validity from the first confirmation was 0.85 because of the inaccurate contexts, difficult questions, and scientifically incorrect questions, but after the correction of the questionnaire the content validity was 0.92. The reliability coefficient was 0.68 by Cronbach's Alpha. Also, t-test was performed in order to identify the difference in the conception on state of matters and change of the state according to grades or sexes. As a result, firstly, both the fifth and sixth graders recorded higher rate of correct answers in solid matter and liquid than in gas on the conception formation about state of matter, and the misconceptions of the gas revealed higher rate than those of the solid or the liquid. Secondly, as for the significant difference test on state of matters, there was no significant difference according to graders. However, females recorded significantly higher mark than males in the test for the solid and the liquid (p<.05). Thirdly, the major misconceptions about the change of states caused that the most students recognized and interpreted phenomenal levels through intuitive method not to understand the change of states of matters by scientific methods. Fourthly, the rate of correction of each conception on change of states of matters show no significant difference according to grades, but females had significantly higher mark than males in the conceptions of evaporation, solidification, sublimation, and melting(p<.05). In order to convert misconception to accurate scientific conception, it is necessary to understand the prior conception of children and make children face conflict situation by presenting opposite cases or daily situations which children cannot explain with their conceptions, by using of play-like inquiry learning methods. Therefore, instruction methods are needed to be planned for children to understand the relation between the change of state and the heat energy not only in phenomenal levels but also in microscopic levels. In addition, further studies are required to investigate the cause of misconception formation on the state of matters and the change of state.
