An experiment is one of the important tools for science education. It helps to fully understand the concepts or problems concerning teaching-learning topic. Needless to mention, it is an indispensable element of any science class. As emphasized the seventh curriculum, the abilities for investigation come from the experiments and investigations. However, the experiments were rarely implemented or done in a restricted way in science class. For example, those outlined in the textbooks had the forms of 'cookbook style', thus they could not be used to test pupils' own independent ideas. The previous researches involve neither finding out pupils' way of doing science nor analyzing the characteristics of scientific reasoning. So, we can not know whether pupils' activities in preceding experiments are appropriate for the scientific reasoning. In light of this circumstance, this research has its focus on providing analysis of how pupils arrive at scientific reasoning while solving investigation task. Two investigation tasks were given to four first grade pupils in this research. First task involve predicting of floating and sinking. Pupils were asked to test the validity of their predicting and they carried out an experiment to test their ideas. When experiments were done, interviews were conducted in order to find out what pupils consider from an experiment, the reasons for the experimental design and any variables identified. Second task was given to test the ideas for any changes in speed of the paper helicopter. Specifically, pupils were asking to find which paper helicopters showed the slowest speed when falling. They were asked to provide underlying reasons for this particular phenomena. The intention was to find out whether pupils were able to control the variables in their experiments. There was no time limit in completing the tasks. Entire experiments and interviews were recorded using the camcorder for the purpose of analysis. The pupils' scientific reasoning processes were analyzed in terms of the dimensions of scientific reasoning such as exploration dimension and handling variable. Exploration dimension with four levels entailed the way children coordinated explanations with evidence. Handling variables entailed the extent to which children could identify a variable as something the effect of which could be investigated, and control for in the case where there were confounding variables. As a result, pupils showed some similarities and differences in investigation processes. Pupil A exhibited an insatiable curiosity and asked numerous questions. Moreover, she correctly made inferences basing on her predictions prior to the experiment. This pupil showed consistency in her idea throughout the investigation task. Furthermore, she recognized the variables and was able to design the experiment controlling the variables. Overall, her analysis showed the highest level. On the other hands, pupil B was able to tell his idea with confidence. He relied a lot on the data in reference to the floating and sinking phenomena. He showed more of conceptual analysis. While pupil C showed many interests in the experiment, he showed lack in concentration. Not only that, he showed a lack of consistency and analysis in what variable influenced the floating and sinking phenomena. While pupil C was able to design the experiment using weight variable, but he was not able to design the one using length variable. Pupil D showed prudent attitude during experiment. She was able to extract consistent analysis from the experiment. Overall, pupils B and D realized the changes in variable, but both were not able to carry out an experiment controlling the variables. In short, the characteristics of first grade's scientific reasoning are as follows. First, pupils showed some difference in scientific reasoning. Nevertheless, they were able to provide the explanations for the phenomena and test their ideas. In the case of handling variable, they could recognize the variables of their experiments. Second, they showed the differences in overall level, but showed some similar level to a certain extent. Third, they were not able to do consistent interpretation while considering comprehensive characteristics in variety of data. Rather, they recognized things individually. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, first grades are in the concrete operational period. Pupil A had an ability to manipulate mixed variables in skillful manner. Pupil C was able to conduct experiment controlling the variables. It means that some first grades were able to go beyond the concrete operational period. Therefore, it seems crucial to reconsider the curriculum for the investigations and experiments by taking pupils' characteristics of scientific reasoning into an account.
