Communication is an important part of daily life and a person communicates his thoughts from the moment he is born and over the course of his life. Communicating thought in children with Down syndromeis a problem that is as important and urgent as much as it is to others. However, due to frequent ear infections, decreased hearing abilities, laxity of muscles around the mouth, small oral cavity compared to the size of their tongue, mental retardation and other problems, children with Down syndrome have difficulties in effectively communicating their thoughts. In particular, they have greater deficiency in their computation compared to understanding vocabulary, and show difficulties in using verbs which requires syntactic and morphologic knowledge (Choi Jung A, 2003), and due to the insufficient ability for abstract thinking, they have a tendency to insist on using a set of familiar words, most of which are nouns. In conducting studies in nouns and verbs, naming objects is most frequently used, and by analyzing the types of errors in addition to the frequency of errors, it was found that differences in information processing process of children are possible (Mcgregor 1997; Lahey & Edward, 1999). In this study, therefore, a noun and verb object naming test was conducted with 10 children with Down Syndrome, 10 normal children, and 10 children with other mentally retarded children who are at the same verbal age in order to understand whether differences exist in noun and verb selection between children with Down Syndrome, normal children, and children with other mental retardation. The result of observing noun and verb error frequency and error type frequency of children with Down syndrome and normal children, and children with Down syndrome and children with other form of mental retardation revealed the following. First, there were no differences in the frequency of noun selection error between children with Down syndrome and normal children, but significant differences were found in the frequency by error type. Second, error frequency of verb selection was found to be higher in children with Down syndrome compared to normal children. In other words, children with Down syndrome were found to be at a lower level in verb selection compared to normal children. Third, there were no significant differences in the noun and verb error frequency and frequency by error type between children with Down syndrome and children with other forms of mental retardation. Fourth, in the noun and verb comprehension test between children with Down syndrome and normal children, and between children with Down syndrome and children with other forms of mental retardation, no significant differences were found. Through the above results children with Down syndrome did not show differences in frequency of noun selection compared to normal children but showed significant differences in the types of errors made. In addition, verb selection error was also found to be higher than that of normal children. On the other hand, there were no significant differences in vocabulary comprehension, therefore, the results suggest that vocabulary storage of children with Down syndrome is similar to that of normal children, but their difficulties are in the selection of words. It is believed that such study results will serve as basic material for selection or use of vocabulary in language intervention for children with Down syndrome.
