Today, owing to development of diverse sciences and technologies, we can afford to enjoy various conveniences in our everyday life. As diverse journalism media such as electronic newspapers have emerged, the media have been more influential over individuals and the society at large. It must be the journalists that are responsible for such media and lead them. Journalists are obliged to deliver to the public the events occurring in diverse environments surrounding the members of our society without distortion and with precision. For the members of our society come to get most of the information from the reports by journalists. Nevertheless, the media tend to deliver more information than necessary in the excuse of 'freedom of expression' or 'people's right to know' only to affect the society at large negatively, causing a social unstability or imitated crimes. Moreover, we hear about journalists' unethical legworks such as incorrect reports, infringements on human rights, bribes and the like, almost every day.In order to correct such unethical behaviors of journalists', various codes and system have been operated. The examples are such heteronomous regulations as Journalism Code and relevant systems, and such autonomous self-regulations as 'Media Ethics Platform and Its Practical Guide', but such systems seem to have limited effects in correcting diversified unethical behaviors performed by journalists, because of journalists' poor sense of duty, nominal punishments inside media, ineffective codes or platforms not much covering journalists' diverse legworks and so on. Accordingly, it is deemed necessary to consolidate the philosophical basis of media ethics through 'the ethics of virtue' focused on not 'activities' but 'actors'.With such a basic conception in mind, this study aimed to review the theories of two figures representing 'ethics of virtue' Aristotle and Macintyre and thereupon, suggest the philosophical basis for the ethics of media. Aristotle's virtue of middle path may well be a reference useful to the journalists engaged in legworks for their judgement on a proper behavior. For an example, if a journalist has succeeded in internalizing the virtue of 'courage', he or she could resist an outside political or economic pressure to deliver to members of our society the fair and true information. In addition, Aristotle's and Macintyre's theories emphasizing community life and cultivation of virtue will be useful ethical guides for our modern journalists not to pursue individual commercial profits but to report for the common good. This study consists of the following chapters; The first chapter reviews the roles of media growing gradually in our modern society and the need for ethics of media and thereupon, discusses why the ethics of virtue should be introduced by means of some journalists' unethical behaviors. The second chapter examines the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle's ethics and his critical modern disciple Macintyre's ethics of virtue and suggests why this theory should be introduced to our journalism. The third chapter suggests Aristotle's and Macintyre's virtues or 'courage', 'justice', 'moderation', 'responsibility' and 'cooperation' as the virtues with which our journalists should be armed, and then, describes why our journalists should be armed with those virtues and then, discusses the cases of the journalists who had internalized such virtues for their legworks and thereby, recommend the ways to help our journalists internalize such virtues.Of course, it is most desirable to practice the virtues repeatedly since young to internalize them, but if our journalists who have little been trained on virtues to be engaged in legworks and reporting should be given diverse opportunities to cultivate the virtues, the limits of Journalism Code and relevant platforms would be surmounted. In our society where media play very important roles, a correct ethical attitude is an essential condition for journalists. So, those students who want to be journalists or the incumbent journalists are obliged to be aware of importance of ethical cultivation and thereby, continue to make efforts to internalize the virtues. In addition, universities and media companies should spare time to help their employees cultivate the virtues.Journalists are obliged to provide members of our society with fair and true information. They should not be influenced by their subjective ideas or commercial profits to lose their sense of mission as journalists. Journalists should not fail to internalize such virtues required of them as courage, justice, moderation, responsibility and cooperation and thereby, endeavor to create true and fair journalism.
