In this study, quality of life of patients with chronic and episodic migraine is investigated to compare their quality of life by using quality of life assessments tools, which are MIDAS(migraine disability assessment) questionnaire and MSQoL(migraine-specific quality of life) questionnaire. The investigation has been performed from November 2005 to April 2006 for the patients, who visited neurology department of C university hospital because of headache. The patients for the question investigation consist of 34 patients with chronic migraine(CM) and 48 patients with episodic migraine(EM). The diagnosis of migraines is followed by migraine criteria of International Headache Society(IHS). There is no statistically significant difference of demographic characters between CM and EM patients found. When clinical characters of CM and EM patients are compared, headache frequency per a month, a number of companied symptoms, and pain duration are significantly high, and acute-care medication effect of CM patients are less than EM patients, while duration of illness is not statistically significant difference. In the comparisons of CM and EM patients MIDAS score with 5 questions, the second question (reduced effectiveness at work/school), the fourth question (reduced effectiveness in housework), total scores, and the question A (headache days the last 3 months) are high in CM patients. In other questions, scores of CM patients are slightly high. MIDAS Grade of CM patients are also higher than EM patients. In MSQoL score comparisons of CM and EM patients, three parts of life qualities, which are role-function restrictive, role-function preventive, and emotional function due to headache, and total score is less in CM patients than EM patients. The study shows that life qualities of the patients with chronic migraine are significantly lower than of the patients with episodic migraine. From the results, chronic migraine could be not only a matter of individual, but also a serious problem of social cost and public health. Therefore, the change of the life quality of the patients should be considered to improve the quality after curing chronic migraine.
