The objective of this study is to analyze the affecting factors on utilization and selection for western medicine and Korean traditional medicine for the purpose of providing policy implications for effective and balanced health care services utilization. The data were collected from national health and nutrition survey executed by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affair(KIHSA) in 2001. The results of this study were as follows; First, for the use of western and Korean traditional medical clinic, men preferred to use western medical institute when their regular medical clinic in use was western medical clinic as their age gets lower and educational history gets higher, and women preferred to use Korean traditional medical institute when their regular medical clinic in use was Korean traditional medical clinic as their age gets higher and education history gets lower. Second, from the result of selection factor for the western and Korean traditional medical institute, the probability of using Korean traditional medical treatment showed higher rate in case that the conventional medical clinic is the Korean traditional medical clinic not the western medical clinic, in the case of existence of chronic disease and musculoskeletal and circulatory disease. And the probability to use both of western medical clinic and Korean traditional medical clinic increases as the age of patients ranges 40 to 59 years old, their educational history is in the middle group, the conventional medical clinic is Korean traditional medical clinic, the moving distance to the western medical clinic gets increases, number of days for the contraction of disease gets increases, the number of disease gets increased, the number of days for the negative activity gets larger and the disease is related to circulatory disease not the digestive tract and respiratory disease. Third, looking at the factors influencing on the number of uses in the western and Korean traditional medical treatment, the rate of using the western medical treatment gets increased as the age of patients gets lower, they have no spouse, recognize their health condition is bad more, are more interested in health, do not drink, have increased number of exercises, recognizes the stress lower and have the experience of physical health examination and cancer examination, the medical cost gets lower, their disease is acute or they have many number of diseases and the kindness of western medical clinic is higher. On the other hand, for the factors influencing on the number of uses in the Korean traditional medical treatment, the rate of using the Korean traditional medical treatment gets increased as the patients are women, their age gets higher, there is no conventional medical clinic, the distance to travel gets further, the medical cost gets higher, their disease is not acute and chronic, the number of diseases gets increased, the number of negative activity decreases and the kindness and recognition of medical cost for the Korean traditional medical treatment get increased. As a result, there are several features in the use of western and Korean traditional medical treatment and selection of medical institute. First, summarizing the factor of selecting the western and Korean traditional medical treatment, the significant influencing factor is the type of conventional medical clinic and existence of chronic disease. Eventually the case of selecting Korean traditional medical treatment against the western medical treatment is that highly aged patients with chronic disease usually choose the Korean traditional medical clinic as the conventional medical clinic. This result infers that the change of policy such as scientific development of Korean traditional medicine and extension of medical insurance will make more increased demand of Korean traditional medical treatment as people choose the Korean traditional medical clinic as their conventional medical institute. Second, comparing the use between western medical treatment and Korean traditional medical treatment with different kinds of disease, the case using both western and Korean traditional medical treatment often occurred in musculoskeletal and circulatory disease and the case using the western medical treatment often occurred in respiratory and digestive tract disease. At first, for the disease which gets many uses of Korean traditional medical treatment, it is required to enhance the efficiency of Korean traditional medical treatment by developing standardized cooperative medical diagnostic model and cooperative payment structure. Third, as the disease is acute, the number of diseases is a lot and the days of activity get reduced, the use of western medical treatment increases. And, as the disease is chronic, the recognition of kindness is higher and the recognition of medical cost is higher, the use of Korean traditional medical treatment increases. This result shows that patients with acute disease prefer the western medical treatment and patients with chronic disease prefer the Korean traditional medical treatment. In addition, patients visited western medical clinic more when they have several diseases and have uncomfortable feeling for their activity directly. On the contrary, patients think that the use of Korean traditional medical treatment costs more and recognize it as the purchase of medical product not the medical use differently from the western medical treatment.
