The health of feet is connected with individual's health and affects peoples activity. In order to improve comfort of toes socks, both foot size and foot shape must be considered. And the physical properties, the physiological responses, and the subjective sensation of different socks should be investigated. The purpose of this study was 1) to analyze male and female's foot data(using 2005 Size Korea Data) to improve the fit sensation of toes socks, 2) to estimate physical properties of different toes socks, and 3) to determine the physiological responses and subjective sensation of the socks. The characteristics of commercial socks and two kinds of socks knitted with blend yarns of cotton/warm fiber and blend yarns of cotton/chitosan fiber. The four different shapes of socks were knitted and evaluated fit sensation by twenty healthy student subjects. Four male and four female students participated in evaluating the comfort sensation of three different socks. The heat retention rate, the wicking time, water absorption, abrasion, tear strength, air permeability, and pilling properties of socks were tested. Factor analysis, Cluster analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan‘s test were performed for statistical analysis of the data by SPSS Win 12.00 program. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Nine factors were extracted through factor analysis and those factors comprised 77.7% of total variance. On the basis of the cluster analysis, four different foot shapes were categorized. The type of foot had the distinguished characteristics according to age. There were no significant difference in fit sensation among four subjective groups of different foot shapes. 2. Evaluation of heat retention properties of different socks of fiber content showed that the warm fiber blend socks had the highest heat retention properties. Commercial socks had the lowest water vapor transport properties and water retention properties. Both the warm blend fiber socks and the chitosan blend fiber socks provided good air permeability and good pilling resistance. Shrinkages depend on both types of fiber contents and the fabric density. The size of toes socks should be corrected and prewashed to improve end-use serviceability. 3. The change of heart rate, pulse rate, and skin temperature showed no difference among three different socks. However, wet sensation, fit sensation, and overall comfort sensation of toes socks were significantly influenced by different fiber content. Subjects felt that commercial socks were less comfortable and slightly tighter. Subjects accepted warm socks more comfortable than chitosan socks and chitosan socks more comfortable than commercial socks.
