The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of an oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the speaking ability of young children. To achieve the research purpose, the below research questions have been established. First, is there an improvement effect of oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the standard pronunciation of speaking ability of young children? Second, is there an improvement effect of oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the expressing gestures of speaking ability of young children? To verify the above questions, 25 children (9 three-year-olds, 8 four-year-olds, and 8 five-year olds) of H Kindergartenin Masan-shi, Kyungsangnamdo were selected as the testing group while 25 children (9 three-year-olds, 8 four-year-olds, and 8 five-year olds) of S Kindergarten were selected as the controlled group. With the subjects, a preliminary inspection had been conducted for 3 weeks from March 10, 2005 to March 31, 2005. The testing was conducted for 30 weeks from April 1, 2005 to forth week of December. Also a post inspection was conducted for 3 weeks from January 4, 2006 to January 25, 2006. The preliminary and post inspection were conducted by a homeroom teacher. The inspections were conducted after the researcher explained in detail the content of the inspections to the homeroom teacher and showed a model of how to conduct an inspection. A teacher who had majored in the early childhood education, had more than ten years of teaching experience, had more than three years of education in narration of children’s storybooks, and is currently working as a narrator of children’sstorybooks currently was selected as a tester. A discussion with the teacher about the content of the class held every week was conducted before a class. The SPSS 12.0 program was used for a statistic process to verify the research results to conduct the ANCOV. First, there was an improvement effect of oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the standard pronunciation of speaking ability of young children. The oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the standard pronunciation of speaking ability of young children had a positive effect on diphthong pronunciations of ‘eh’ and ’uh’ which are especial weakness of people in the Kyongsangdo region. Second, the oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses had a positive effect on the expressing gestures of speaking ability of young children. In conclusion, I’d like to propose a few suggestions for later researches. First, there is a need to develop and distribute various teaching materials for the improvement of speaking ability, and the education sites of young children must be allowed to use the materials actively. Second, in the future linguistic education programs, the oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses must be actively used. Third, although this research was limited to the effects of an oral narration of children’s storybooks and a recitation of children’s verses on the speaking ability of young children, there is a need to verify the effects on not only the speaking ability but also sociality, creativity, and humanity. Forth, there is a limit to generalize the research results nationwide since the research was conducted only to the youngchildren of kindergartens in Masan-shi, Kyongsangnamdo. Therefore, thre is a need for a comprehensive research including various subject regions.
