The effects of temperature on the survival rate, intermolt period and molt increment rate of larvae of swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) at zoea (ZⅠ~ZⅤ), megalopa and crab stages (CⅠ) were investigated. Experiments were conducted at laboratory using 100 ㎖ glass beakers. Larvae were individually reared in glass beakers containing 100 ㎖ of filtered (Whatman: GF/c 1822 047) seawater (30~33 ppt). Beakers with larvae were kept in temperature and light controlled incubator with four selected temperatures (22℃, 24℃, 26℃ and 28℃).
Survival rates of larvae until megalopa stage were investigated at all the selected temperature levels whereas crab stages (CⅠ) were raised except 22℃. After megalopa stage survival of larvae was completely inhibited (0%) at 22℃. At temperature levels 24℃, 26℃ and 28℃ the survival rate of crab stages (CⅠ) were found to be 9%, 13% and 38% respectively. Increased age of larvae showed decrease in the survival rate.
At 22℃ to 24℃ temperature levels larvae survived up to 29 days. On the other hand at 26℃ to 28℃ crab larvae survived up to 35 and 41 days respectively. At all temperatures tested, intermolt period of larvae varied from 2~8 days. At low temperature of 22℃ a long intermolt period was observed. Crab larvae raised in 22℃ and 28℃ temperature, the average intermolt period observed were 8.21±3.44 and 4.26±2.54 respectively.
The relationship between intermolt period and carapace length was tested using regression analysis. Results showed a significant difference between intermolt period and carapace length. A lowest carapace length was observed at 22℃ (P<0.001). During the zoea I stage, carpace length of larvae raised in 22℃, 24℃, 26℃ and 28℃ were 0.85±0.11 ㎜, 0.88±0.14 ㎜, 0.86±0.13 ㎜ and 0.74±0.15 ㎜ respectively. In general, increasing age of larvae (Z~C stages) increased the carapace length in all the temperature levels tested.
Mean carapace length of zoeal stages of crab larvae reared at 22℃ showed a decreased length, it was slightly increased at 24℃. Mean carapace length observed for 24℃ and 28℃ were more or less same. The highest carapace length was observed in larvae reared at 26℃. Significant differences were observed between stages of larvae and molt increment (%) at four temperatures investigated (22℃, 24℃, 26℃ and 28℃).
