Today, mass media not only serves as a mediator between the thoughts and actions of humankind, as well as between the values and norms, it also works as an important arbitrator that can have a tremendous effect on building one's understanding and creating one's consciousness. Television, in particular, being very closely acquainted with the masses, penetrates into the deepest parts of the people's lives and has an enormous influence on the 21st century society. Due to the wide distribution of HDTV and the advancement of Ubiquitous-related technologies, television not only covers digital broadcasting production, but also has established its importance as the "New Media" of the era. Consequently, a great salience has been brought to the TV drama series, often referred as 'the belle of Television.' TV drama series offer a role model for viewers through reenacting real life on the screen. From this point of view, they act as an important factor of gender role development in socialization. This paper, after noticing that most Drama viewers are women, begins its research on the question of how much today's society reflects the changes in perceptions of women, as well as the changes in women's relationships with other people, social position, and living culture. And then, based on the careful examination of numerous TV dramas, as well as various related documents, and other previous research, this paper analyzes how women in post-2000 year TV drama series are portrayed in society. In terms of specific analysis of portraits of women, it conducts a survey of the drama viewers. Meanwhile, in terms of content analysis, it selects the popular TV drama, "My Name is Kim Sam-Soon", as its subject of examination: inquiring demographic analysis, character personality as well as their propensity, professional trait, values, relationship structure, and conflict structure. Also in a survey, it attempts to grasp the levels of viewers' about cognizance of women characters from post-2000 year TV drama series, using three measurable categories: preference- characters whom they prefer; recognition- characters whom they recognize the most and influence- characters who have the most influence over their lives. The research results are as follows: First, women who were traditionally depicted as being obedient, passive, and sacrificial are now portrayed as being positive, active, and progressive about their love, work, as well as life. Second, the advancement of women in society and an increase in their economic participation in society have improved the social position of women, which is helping them to be economically independent. Third, realistic, rationalistic, and logical ideology transformations have cultivated women to be more independent human beings and have caused major changes in their marriage perspectives. Fourth, the social ideology about physical traits of women that previously prevailed in our society has weakened as more people are tending to follow after the gender equality idea. Fifth, the effect of the role model in TV dramas has influenced viewers' values and ideas. So, the emergence of a desirable role model shows positive consequences on the lives of viewers. In conclusion, the modern portrait of women in post-2000 TV dramas, which breakout of the traditional gender role and patriarchic family point of view, illustrates women who are more autonomous and independent. I hope that this research paper can help our generation to have a positive understanding, creating better portraits of women in the 21st century.
