This study intends to know the effects of discussion activity using stories on child's listening and speaking, and with the result it also aims to activate discussion activities and to provide basic materials for children's language education. The following research questions are established for the purposes. 1. What are the effects of discussion activity about stories on child's listening? 2. What are the effects of discussion activity about stories on child's speaking? The subject of this study were 23 children under the researcher in H kindergarten, Chinju, Kyungnam, and a 12 week discussion activity was conducted. The children participated in the activity were consisted of 13 boys and 11 girls of age 5, and 3 of them were intensively observed to analyze their characteristics and changes in listening and speaking. The researcher kept writing ‘an observational journal' of discussion activity as a participant and observer to collect data, and 6 discussions among the total 12 times of discussions were videotaped and transcribed. All the collected data were analyzed with applying triangulation, thick description, referential adequacy materials, and peer debriefing according to the conformities of listening and speaking used in this study. The results of this study are summed up as follows. First, the activity had positive effects on sub-factors of listening: 'attentive listening', 'listen to understand', and 'listening in right attitude'. In 'attentive listening', children's expressions of boredom or tedium were less seen and they listened carefully with staring, answering, and responding. In 'listen to understand', children grasped the main ideas of teacher's questions and what other people said, and asked questions if they didn't understand or if they were curious. They also told their own experiences or added their thoughts, which were related to the main ideas, and their understanding difficult words or complicated sentences was shown increased. In 'listening in right attitude', children listened what others said all the way through and disturbing words or behaviors were less seen. Agitated movement was seen little and even when children became agitated, they soon sat in right position and listened in natural attitude and facial expression. Second, the activity had positive effects on sub-factors of speaking: 'speaking with right words and sentences', 'speaking of feelings properly', and 'speaking in right attitude'. In 'speaking with right words and sentences', children were able to use various vocabularies through interacting with others, and they made natural and rich sentences with right words and various conjunctions. In 'speaking of feelings properly', children told their experiences or feelings in colorful words and in full, minute and elaborate sentences. Their facial expression and behavior showed their feelings well and they modulated their voices to pronounce accurately. In 'speaking in right attitude', children examined listener's responses, told in the definite, quiet and natural attitude and waited their time to speak.
