The study on the works of Yu Hua, who is praised as one of the contemporary China's representative leading Avantgarde writer, in South Korea is currently unsatisfactory. Consequently, this book is an attempt to illuminate the status Yu Hua stands in Chinese Contemporary literature through the analysis of themes and the narration method in Yu Hua's works. First the motivation to research Yu Hua and the research methods are introduced. Next, Yu Hua's literary life is observed in different periods. Yu Hua thought being a dentist did not suit him so during the Era of Pursuit for Purity (1983-1986), Yu Hua started writing due the to the influence of Kawabata Yasunari's novels. The works in this period use intimate and elegant writing style and traditional realism methods to describe the beauty of ordinary life.Books written in the Era of Pursuit(1987-1990) for Existence include Some Reality and Worldly affairs are like a smoke these books were written in successive experimental literary style. He was recognized in literary circles and became the representative writer of Chinese Avantgarde writers. In the Era of Actuality Recurrence (1991-1998), the publication of the novel A Cry in the Drizzle was the start of weakening the 'experimenting' of writing novels and emphasizing the storyline, thereby 'receding to actuality.' In chapter three, subjects such as disasters, death, sins, despair, and penitence in Yu Hua's works are observed. Yu Hua places a human being in an extreme situation of surviving and watches him or her relentlessly. In addition, after the despair of the human being's original nature is put to extreme, Yu Hua tries to find the real meaning through penitence. Showing the truth of the interior of a human placed in a predicament is Yu Hua's consistent aim of creation. In chapter four, this aim is studied in relation to Western philosophy of existentialism. About the human existence in irregular circumstances, affected by fatal intimidation, and faced with desperate fate, Yu Hua uses the composure and keen eye, which are not prone to an ordinary person, to penetrate through the critical part of the soul of a modern person. In other words, as all the effort is used to discover the world, the truth of difficulty of survival is gradually revealed through irregularities that become the norm, suffering that becomes a formality, and futility that shows the end. Yu Hua discerned meaningless circumstances from the deepest location, and the question of survival nears the abyss of hopelessness. After 1990s, in novles, Yu Hua described the succession to tradition in the plot, organization, character, and narrator. The sympathetic and understanding behavior taken toward the protagonist replaced the pitiless observation of reality and anger. In the conclusion, Yu Hua's status in the Chinese Contemporary Literature is observed. As the representative writer of the Avantgarde, Yu Hua's first novels embody strong experimentalism and the cool literary style, which was used to described the loathsome and dark side of the human nature. Odd feelings are felt throughout his novels, which persistently show violence, death, disaster, sin, and penitence. However, his novels also include remarkable creativity, which is clear contrast to the cool literary style and the capricious plot filled with fear. This outcome is the power of making readers wait for Yu Hua.
