Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical approach that is performed with special surgical tools and a laparoscope. Although it has become increasingly popular, there are some problems in applying laparoscopic surgery. Due to its minimally invasive nature, there have been many attempts to improve its performance by applying robotics technology. In this paper, a 5-DOF laparoscopic assistant robot system with a bending mechanism is presented. The system consists of three main components: a 3-DOF bendable laparoscope, a 2-DOF external manipulator and a passive base. By using both external and internal motions, the system provides sufficient workspace for performing general laparoscopic surgeries. In comparison with other systems, the proposed system requires lesser external motion due to the use of internally bending mechanism and thus, is expected to have fewer chance of interfering with the surgeon and patient. Moreover, the system can be mounted onto the bed and is compatible with the existing surgical environment. A prototype of the system is developed with the consideration of functional requirements for general laparoscopy. Based on the parameters of the prototype, workspace analysis is performed. The redundant control scheme to actuate the combined motion is presented. The image capturing and displaying has been implemented using an image grabbing board and the voice command interface has been implemented by adopting commercial software into control program. Through the comparison of outer workspace of between AESOP and proposed system, it is found that the outer workspace of the proposed system is reduced. Experiment on test-bed shows that the developed system operates properly.
