Behavior analysis of deception involves comparing facial, bodily, and verbal characteristics of truth tellers and liars. Previous research has demonstrated some difference between the two groups. Liars are presumed to feel guilt, fear and duping delight more readily than truth tellers. When liars try to hide their real emotions, they could inadvertently show false or asymmetrical expressions. Liars are also said to show more microexpressions which last only within one fifteenth of a second. Regarding bodily movements, liars are said to show less movements in arms, legs, and shoulders due to decreased control of their body. Finally, liars are supposed to show more speech errors and hesitations, and decreased rate of articulation than truth -tellers.
This study examined facial expressions, bodily movements and verbal behavior of liars to reconfirm the findings of previous research. An experiment was carried out with 42 male college students. Participants had a choice of either taking a 100,000 won (approximately $110) check or not. Participants who took the check were told to tell the investigator that they had not taken the check, and thus to lie. Those who did not take the check told the truth to the investigator. Participants knew that they would be interviewed by an investigator about the whereabouts of the check. Participants were also aware that if they were believed to be truthful, they would be rewarded with money, but if they were judged ti be lying, they would be not be paid any money for participation and furthermore they had to pay back the stolen check. The interview was video taped by two video cameras in the adjacent room through a one-way mirror.
The analyses of video data revealed the following results. First, the liars showed more lip stretchers than the truth tellers. Second, the liars showed less of hands and arms movements than truth-tellers. Third, the liars had showed more fear expressions to relevant questions than to irrelevant questions. Fourth, the liars showed more asymmetric lips movements when answering to relevant questions than to irrelevant questions. Fifth, the liars showed less hand and arm movements when answering to relevant questions than to irrelevant questions.
The conclusion of this study is that liars tend to reveal clues to deception in their facial expression and bodily movements even though they try hard to control their action and verbal behaviors. The results of this study indicated that the types of questions matter in detecting deception through facial and bodily behaviors.
