This study aims to understand the process of early children’s generation of meaning by investigating what differences are there between the meanings included in early children’s picture books and those generated by early children through a semiotic approach, and based on this, explore an educational approach appropriate to early children. For this purpose, this study has selected as its objects of analysis 10 books, which are evaluated as quality books among other books at the top 30 in sales from 2002 to 2006 at two big booksores (Kyobomungo and Youngpungmungo) in Seoul, and 3 Internet bookstores (Alladin, Libro, Yes24). As for the subjects, it has selected 20 early children (10 male and female respectively), who can represent their ideas as they have relatively free linguistic expression. First of all, we investigate what meanings the early children’s picture books have by analyzing them based on four concepts from semiotics, that is, the syntagm, the paradigm, the actant, and the myth. By getting the early children’s responses to the questions composed with special reference to the myth among other analyzed contents, we investigate how the early children generate meanings. We have extracted the early children’s own common ideas by concentrating on those contents that show differences after we have compared the meanings included in the early children’s books and those generated by the early children, and based on this, analyzed the process of meaning generation. The results from the analyses of the early children’s responses and of the contents of the picturebooks in accordance with the purpose of this study are as follows. Above all, as a result of the analysis of the contents of the picture books, we have found out the following properties of the meanings included in the books. First, early children’s developmental properties should be understood and recognized. In John Patrick Norman McHennessy: The Boy Who Always Late, the school and teachers cut off the child’s natural thinking and incessantly force social rules and norms on him in the hope of making him entered into the adults’ system. Through John’s opposition to teachers, this book has the meaning that we should understand early children’s internal state of ego, and not force adults’ thinking on them but wait for them. David in No, David! represents early children’s developmental properties, and with David’s behavior this book tries to get other early children to sympathize and understand and adults to recognize and understand. Cloud Bread portrays a mother and a father, who are not instructive and authoritarian but do accept early children’s language and behavior in a receptive attitude. In this respect, setting an equal relationship of early children having stood in the position of the weak so far to adults, this book has the meaning that we should recognize and understand early children in a receptive attitude. Second, a harmonious society can be realized through recognition and sharing. By presenting Fredrick, which think and behavior differently though it is a mouse in appearance, Fredrick has the meaning that a harmonious society is realized by the recognition and sharing of different insides. Alligator Duck Guji Gujihas the meaning that by acknowledging the appearances as they are though they have different appearances respectively, a society is maintained and preserved. Third, the value of existence varies with the assignment of meaning. Fox Gives Birth to a Duckhas the meaning that if one changes his/her behavior for what he/she puts a meaning on, it in turn takes him/her to be meaningful existence. Dog Dung has the meaning that an object has different meaning drawing on the meaning one assigns to it. Fourth, the prejudice to gender roles should be eliminated firstly from home. Pig Book has the meaning that the male/female relationship shouldbe maintained not vertically but horizontally, and that one should not have any prejudice against the other but should acknowledge each other. Fifth, excretion is a natural physiological phenomenon. Who Pooped On My Head? has the meaning that the excrement resulted from the behavior of excretion, as an important phenomenon in which every life form is engaged, is natural and familiar rather than shameful. The properties of the meanings generated by the early children while they read the books are as follows. First, early children understand a story based on visible phenomena. Whereas Rainbow Fish and Fredrick show that one becomes happy when he/she share his/her own possessions, the early children show different opinions in that they take Fredric as a happy mouse but the rainbow fish as an unfortunate fish. That is to say, the early children judge something to be happy or unhappy by its outer appearance. From Fox Gives Birth to a Duck, they don’t recognize the change in fox’s meaning assignment to the duck but pay attention to the fact that a new friend has appeared. As for Cloud Bread, they understand the story only paying attention to the result of helping father while not knowing how tough father’s work is. With Dog Dung, it is revealed that the early children take only such information given by the texts and pictures while thinking that the dog dung cannot move trapped within the ground into pieces, but cannot predict changes in meaning and emotion in accordance with the changes of time. Second, early children understand a story on the basis of their experiences. From No, David!, the early children feel sympathy and compassion seeing the behavior by David, who live being told "No" innumerably. And, they feel spiritual safety when they confirm that at the bottom of mother’s behavior of restraint lies her love. For the early children, who has acquired the ability to distinguish what are the same or different through their experiences and learning, the situation is not understandable in which the baby alligator Guji Guji in Alligator Duck Guji Guji lives with ducks. After all, they have the equation which states that what have the same appearance are friends or families. When reading Pig Book, they present anxiety and uncomfortableness due to the absence of mother, and think that household chores are mother’s business. Third, early children understand a story based on segmented thought. Early children see the events of a story not in the order of progress but rather separately. Thus, they reconstruct the story by connecting the scenes of their interest and the episodes contained in them among other scenes and episodes.
