The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the value of literature approach to toddler’s math education by analyzing toddler’s math concepts reflected in 20 toddler’s favorite story books and examining toddler’s math concepts expressed in the contents of children’s story books. In addition, this study is intended to find valuable activities to help toddlers build up their math concepts by connecting toddler’s development natures with their daily mathematical experiences. To examine whether it has educational effects when literature approach is applied to math education, it focuses on analyzing and confirming mathematical concepts expressed in children’s story books. To meet this intention, the researcher asked cooperation to 10 instructors who currently work for pre schools or kindergartens in Seoul holding master’s or higher degrees in early childhood education related majors. After several meetings with them, they recommended 50 story books as the most frequently used books in early childhood education sites. The researcher selected 20 books that had a higher rate of double re- commendation. The researcher also reviewed and discussed with those 10 instructors about mathematical themes of the 6th early childhood education curriculum and NCTM’s mathematic education. The researcher referred to the analysis criteria for math concept analysis based on the common things addressed in both areas and analyzed each story book based on the analysis criteria. Consequently, the researcher selected analysis criteria for toddler’s math concepts on the base of mathematical themes of the 6th early childhood education curriculum and NCTM’s mathematic education and analyzed each story book, focusing on the expression of the contents in each book. As a result, this study found that there are many expressions on toddler’s math concepts in the story books that are frequently used by toddlers and those concepts expressed frequently in such books are one to one correspondence, number counting, number recognition, addition, subtraction, division, part and whole, classification, comparison, ordering, space relation, shape, measuring and time. The propriety of these analysis results was verified by 8 specialists in early childhood education, who have over 5-year experience in early childhood education, early childhood math education and early childhood literature education, holding master’s degrees in early childhood education or pae- dology. The outcomes of these study processes are as in the following; First, it is found that children’s story books are effective for toddlers to express and understand their math concepts because such books organize contents expressing methodical concepts such as one to one correspondence, number counting, number recognition, addition, subtraction, division, part and whole, classification, comparison and ordering closely attaching to daily life and such story books facilitate toddler’s connection with math because they contain many math concepts. Second, in story books, numbers of the objects toddlers use frequently, recognition of space relationship, big and small things, ordering, time concept according to their daily routine and problem solving in various circumstances are presented in narration to facilitate toddler’s understanding. Therefore, it is found that story books are effective to help toddlers connect their understanding with their daily life and extend their math concepts. Third, it is found that toddler’s understanding on math concepts based on story books, a literature approach, is effective because this way presents mathematical facts or concepts in narration rather than in mere explanation and vocabularies bearing mathematical expressions are frequently used in these story books to make toddlers explore math concepts in excitement and to give them a chance to build up vocabularies expressing mathematical understanding and relationship and communication their understanding on math concepts.
