This is a study of group inquiry through Reggio Emilia Project performed upon five-year-old children as shown. The purpose of this study is to observe how children express and develop their thinking and how teachers support the development of thinking process. This study will reveal the meaning of group inquiry through Reggio Emilia Project for social construction of knowledge. Pursuant to the purpose of the study, the following questions will be presented: 1.How children express and develop their thinking in group inquiry process? 2. How teachers support group inquiry process? 3.What is the educational meaning of group inquiry revealed through Reggio Emilia Project? Over thirteen weeks from January 9 to April 3, 2007, the researcher and a collaborative teacher observed the project titled ‘Wall Decoration’ performed forty two times by 4 five-year-old children of S kindergarten located in Gyeonggi-do. The data were collected through participant observation and other means including video and audio materials, pictures, journals and interviews with teachers. The collected data were analyzed in reference to (i) the microgenetic approach to examine the learning process as shown in group inquiry and (ii) the grounded theory approach to analyze the meaning of group inquiry. The study results are as follows: 1.Children express and change their thinking while participating in Reggio Emilia Project. First, upon encountering with an unfamiliar situation, children refer to diverse possibilities and reveal thinking on new things. Expression of new thinking draws on one's own insight as well as borrowing from other children in the group. Second, children try 'think on thinking' and continuously search for changes in thinking through out the Project. The process of 'think on thinking' is executed by monitoring of inner speech, reflection on private speech, checking through discussion and verification by experiment. Finally, children organize and articulate their thinking by negotiation, explanation and elaboration on explanation, and create a meaning shared by group. 2. Teachers participate in and support group inquiry. First, for the initiation and continuation of group inquiry, teachers see topics and materials from a new angle, and shed a new light on familiar things for children. Second, teachers utilize representation in order to help children express meaning of their thinking and voluntarily make inquiries. Third, teachers present questions intended to help children confirm actual thinking, face differences in thinking and develop new thinking. This enables children to search for the meaning of thinking by themselves through ‘think on thinking’. Fourth, teachers suggest reflection on thinking process and help enable children to summarize their experience of group inquiry and prepare a manual based on acquired knowledge. This will help children organize and elaborate thinking and, as a result, construct a meaning shared by the group. Fifth, teachers invent and use procedures such as‘listening’and ‘collective decision-making’which help children acquire a strategy of cooperative inquiry. 3. Based on the understanding of the children’s thinking and the teachers’ support methods, the meaning of group inquiry through Reggio Emilia Project is interpreted as follows: The meaning of group inquiry found through Reggio Emilia Project is 'a joyful play field' where the participants' meanings of thinking are revealed, brought together and harmonized into one shared by the group.
