Objectives : This study aimed at generating methods that enable the utilization of clinical constipation intervention as nursing intervention through the examination of the effect of a constipation intervention program on cancer patients who displayed the symptoms of constipation. Methods : The subjects of the study include 32 patients who showed the symptoms of constipation among those who admitted to the cancer ward of a university hospital in Seoul from May to October 2006. The subjects were divided into an experimental group of 10 patients and a control group of 22 patients. With regard to research design, non-equivalent control group post-test design (quasi-experimental design) was employed. The patients in the experimental group that had agreed to the implementation of a constipation intervention program were given constipation interventions (including diet therapy and changes in living habits, drinking water, exercise, and abdominal massage) everyday for seven days from the day they were admitted. Then, assessment of their constipation and measurement of their defecation frequency were carried out. The collected data was statistically processed using SPSS PC win 11.0 program. In order to verify home homogeneity, χ² test and t-test were performed. In addition, Fisher''s exact test was carried out to compare medication for the experimental group with medication for the control group. Also Kruskal Wallis test and repeated measures of ANOVA tests were conducted to compare the degrees of constipation of the two groups. Furthermore, Fisher''s exact test and t-test were performed for the comparison of the defecation frequency of the two groups. Results : First, the 32 subjects in the study were mostly men aged under 60. All of them had malignant tumors and they had no difference in the general characteristics between the two groups. Second, mediations for the subjects who were vulnerable to constipation were examined on narcotic agent, constipation alleviator, and enema. There was no difference in the administration of narcotic agent between the experimental group and the control group (p=0.073). Before the implementation of the constipation intervention program, there was no difference in the use of constipation alleviator between the two groups before constipation intervention (p=0.570). However, after the implementation, the experimental group used less constipation alleviator than the control group after constipation intervention (p=0.048). This indicates that the constipation intervention program helps to resolve constipation problems of patients in the experimental group. The number of patient''s using enema for the intervention period of 7days, the experimental and the control group showed difference whether they received enema treatment or not (p=0.051). Third, the constipation scores of patients in the experimental group showed a significant difference between before and after the implementation of the intervention program. The average constipation score, which was 8.30±1.89 before the implementation, declined to 6.00±1.70 3 days after starting the program and to 3.40±1.65 after 7 days implementation. Overall, the average score of the experimental group displayed a significant difference as time goes by. On the other hand, constipation scores of patients in the control group was 6.50±1.90 before the implementation, increased to 7.41±1.68 3 days after starting the implementation and to 7.82±1.767 after 7 days implementation. The average score of the control group showed a significant difference as time goes by. Fourth, the average frequency of defecation of a patient in the experimental group was 2.50±0.85 times for 7 days, and that of a patient in the control group was 2.18±0.73 times. The defecation frequencies of the two groups showed a statistically significant difference (p=0.000). Conclusion: In conclusion, the constipation intervention program used in this study was confirmed to be an effective nursing intervention program for reducing constipation of the cancer patients, as it decreased the constipation scores and it increased the frequency of defecation. Therefore it is considered that if this constipation intervention program is utilized as a nursing intervention for the patient under treatment who experienced the physical discomfort and the decline of constipation, it will be contribute to cancer patients defecation status and to the improvement of their life quality.
