The purpose of this study is to identify the differences of effects by herbal prescriptions to improve muscle hypertrophy and cardiovascular endurance on athletes. Three different herbal prescriptions, i.e. Dokhwalgiseangtang for increasing muscle strength of upper extremity, Ganghwalseungseubtang for increasing muscle strength of lower extremity, Pamultang for increasing muscle strength of whole body and cardiovascular endurance were applied. For this study, 28 throwers were divided randomly 4 groups (Dokhwalgiseangtang group, n=7; Ganghwalseungseubtang group, n=7; Pamultang group, n=7; Placebo group, n=7) for investigating muscle hypertrophy and 14 long distance runners were divided randomly 2 groups(Samultang group, n=7; Placebo group, n=7) for comparing cardiovascular endurance. All subjects were administrated t.i.d during 4 weeks by double blind over cross method and measured on body composition by In-body 4.0(Biospace Co., Korea), flexion and extension strength of shoulder and knee joint by HUMAX??/NORMTM(CSMI Inc. U.S.A), circumstance and area of upper arm and thigh by CT(Computerized tomography), cardiovascular endurance by COSMED s.r.l Quark b2(Italy), and analyzing energy metabolism profiles by blood serum.
The main results of this study were as follows;
1. Differences of effects by herbal prescriptions on muscle strength of upper and lower extremities
1) All variables of body composition didn't show significant changes.
2) Extension strength of Rt knee joint in Dokhwalgiseangtang group and Ganghwalseungseubtang group improved significantly after administration(p<.01) and showed significant(p<.05) differences between groups. Flexion strength of Rt knee joint in Dokhwalgiseangtang group and Ganghwalseungseubtang group improved significantly after administration(p<.01), but showed no significant differences between groups.
3) Extension and flexion strength of Lt knee joint in Dokhwalgiseangtang group and Ganghwalseungseubtang group improved significantly after administration(p<.05, p<.001) and showed significant(p<.05) differences between groups.
4) Extension and Flexion strength of Rt & LT shoulder joint showed improving tendency after administration, but showed no significant differences between groups.
5) Area and circumstance of arm showed significant(p<.001, p<.001) differences after administration, but showed no significant differences between groups.
6) Area and circumstance of thigh showed significant(p<.001, p<.01) differences after administration, but showed no significant differences between groups.
7) Serum CPK and Creatine concentration were changed significantly(p<.001) after administration, but showed no significant differences between groups.
2. Differences of effects by herbal prescriptions on cardiovascular endurance
1) All variables of body composition didn't show significant changes.
2) All-out time Pamultang group was increased significantly(p<.05) after administration and showed significant(p<.05) difference between groups.
3) Lactate level by times was decreased significantly(p<.001) after administration, but showed no significant differences between groups.
These results of this study suggest that Dokhwalgiseangtang and Ganghwalseungseubtang has a hypertrophic effect on upper & lower extremities and Pamultang has a benefit to improve cardiopulmonary endurance and recover exercise fatigue for aerobic exercise.
