Park, Mok-wol's poetic mind started with his desire to express how he felt after reading a book, his nostalgia and yearning for his family and home when he was away from his home studying in a strange city in middle school, and his sorrow, dream, faith in things that were beautiful. After searching for the proper language with which to express his inner feelings, he finally came to the conclusion that poetry was the most appropriate means. For the forty years since then he only sought after poetry, living in the world of pure lyricism to express himself. That is, his lyricism was summarized by his words, "Poetry originates in the mind," with his personal feelings and desires well delivered in his poems. His poems can be categorized into the early, middle and later poems according to the changing patterns of his "dreams." His dreams were the purpose of his life and existence to help him overcome the failed desires(yearnings) and their frustrations. With every stage of life there came a variety of difficulties, in front of which he continued to dream. He translated his dreams into words, through which he got the power to pull himself up. In other words, he wrote poems where he made his own shelter and found peace and devised his own ways to deal with reality. He wrote poems to quench his thirst for life. Writing poetry was accompanied with dynamic emotions and beautiful words, which worked to cure his damaged soul. The ways that his yearnings(longings or desires) were described changed along with his life stages. As for the types of his dreams, his early poems, which are found in his Cheongrokjip in 1946 and Sandohwa in 1955, were dominated by his hopes(visions) for the future including the liberation of his country and his own personal dreams. His middle poems from Nan·Gita in 1959 and Cheongdam in 1964 depict his being loyal to his roles as a poet and head of the family and his dreaming about happiness in the middle of solitude of life. And his later poems from The Leaves of Gyeongsangdo in 1968, Musun in 1976, and Soft and Big Hands in 1979 deliver his desires for his own poems, which were put into the following expressions; 'It will get tangled up in the eyelashes of children, passes through the heart of those who are thirsty, and hangs on the eaves of someone as big autumn raindrops.' They also show his metaphysical desires to discard the vain secular greeds and seek the heavenly life. The discussions can be further elaborated as follows: In his early poems, Park, Mok-wol used the images of nature and spring such as "dreaming persons, rocks, sky, you, night, seeds of sorrow, Gashinaesa, mountain shadow, river ferry, roads in the wheat field, green deer, travelers, mountains, wild roses, plots of wormwood, the moon, the places and natural views related to his hometown, heat haze, and pear flowers." He resorted to those images to express his blue dreams about the future(hoping for the independence of his nation, building a home with his love, and becoming a poet). His uses of metaphors and repetition were intended to resolve his emotional issues and to come up with the power to lead a life. Entering the middle period, he introduced those things that were ordinary or related to his hometown. They include "dialects, earth, the places near Dangin-ri, wornout hats, raining streets, shabby clothes, dialects, elder brother, dew flowers, night skies, mulberry trees, smell of dew and grass, rattan chairs, clapping sounds of the angels, another rattan chair prepared, clouds, Hesse, simple water paintings, distant mountain peaks, cuckoos, weighing beams, a tree, stairs, shoes, snow and icy roads, the cold roads of humiliation and starvation, smiling faces, my music to play in front of God, the nine-step stair, poet, poetry, night fog, anguish, endurance, the humankind's desire for truth, tear-filled fruit, and truthful, nice, and beautiful finished products." They were used to express his accomplished dreams(becoming a poet and raising a family) and the burden, anguish and difficulties of his everyday life in an honest manner. At the same time, there were his desires for a maturer life and perfection with his new and metaphysical dreams. In the later poems, he used the following figurative (metaphorical) poetic words: "being bold as you can get away with/of tomorrow/my poems, who will remember it, my poems will become water too, it's the water crawling around on its own weight today, but it will get tangled up in the eyelashes of children, passes through the heart of those who are thirsty, and hangs on the eaves of someone as big autumn raindrops, the places where I sat down, rushing waves, missing people, thinking about going back, the grass flowers are gone leaving no traces, my traces, the wind has picked it up and swept it away, the Bible, the wife of Lot, the pillar of salt, looking back, burning Sodom and Gomorrah, the road of life toward God, opening eyes, eyes of extreme bliss, conviction and trust in tomorrow, the places of dream being weaved through the night, the dawn of roses and pure gold, the bride took off the mysterious veil of tomorrow and wore the wedding veil, the strong white winds of ideal flying in the sky of noon, our life comes on with a smile of watery eyes, and there is God's bless embedded in every window lit up late at night." Those poetic words represent his wish that his poems will make something perfect in a distant future long after his flesh is gone away and his yearnings for the world of the whole beauty and truth. While he hopes that his works will be meaningful forever, he finds himself still attracted to futile things. Repenting for his weakness tempted by temptations, he looks at his new wish, 'the road of life towards God,' and refines his determination to walk down the road in his old life. Being an old person, Park, Mok-wol learned to see things as they were and developed the vision to appreciate the diverse creatures of God as they were. Getting to know more about God's grace and providence, he realized there were "admiration, appreciation, grace, and providence" in his awakening. Then he discarded his worldly greeds(things that would vanish eventually) and dreamt about the life to live for others, to thank God for his grace, to please him, and to be with him. By expressing his ideas about death and life after death, he tried to overcome his fear of death and cultivate his wishes of ultimate nobleness and pureness that's beyond this world.
