Since NATM excavation method was introduced in 1970's, it was usually applied in hard rock tunnelling. However, application of NATM excavation for shallow depth and poor ground tends to increase as the necessities of urban tunnel and environmental restriction increase recently. Majorities of urban tunnels are shallow with the depth of less than 20 m. So tunnels are usually located at highly weathered poor grounds such as weathered soil and weathered rock, which makes tunnel face variety of complex geological layers. Tunnel, which is constructed in poor and shallow ground, is quite probable to be collapsed, and sometimes the collapse could be developed to the surface. General ground condition of urban area in Japan is usually poor, so plenty of tunnels were constructed with NATM excavation method, as cause establishment Japan's own design standard for tunnelling in soil. However, because of insufficient of experience and established design standard for tunnelling in soil, it is frequent to face difficulties in construction of tunnel in soil mass in Korea. In this study, behaviour of excavated tunnel in soil was analyzed with both continuous and discontinuous numerical approach by examining the collapse volume at tunnel face and ground subsidence for the various cases such as complex ground conditions, excavation methods and tunnel shapes to establish appropriate excavation and reinforcement method for general tunnelling conditions. To analyze the collapse behaviour of tunnel in soil mass, discrete element method PFC-2D(particle flow code) is used, which is capable of realizing discrete behaviour of each grain particles. Moreover, to analyze the stability of tunnel for various excavation methods, FLAC 2D(fast Lagrangian analysis) is used. Appropriateness of excavation method and support pattern could have been verified with FLAC 2D by analyzing the tunnel face stability and effectiveness of supports.
