This paper proposes a method to automatically find available parking space by calculating and detecting the vehicle areas in a parking lot in order to solve the parking problems being raised by the increase in the number of cars nowadays. To detect the vehicle areas, a color image is first received as an input and converted to grey. Next, blurring is performed in order to remove the unnecessary details of the image. On the blurred image, edges are detected using a sobel mask so as to reduce the amount of data to be processed without losing the information about the form of the objects. On the image with the edges detected, erosion and dilation, which are morphological operations, are performed in order to remove the existing noises and to connect the discontinuous edge points more smoothly. Then, binary conversion is carried out to clearly distinguish the edges and to improve the processing rate. The average brightness of each image with the edges detected is dynamically set as the threshold value for binary conversion in the image. This way can produce a clearer borderline by detecting the edges faster than doing binary conversion after grey conversion. The maximum cumulative value of the binary conversion density is used for determination of the vehicle area. In detecting the parking areas, the binary conversion density histogram in vertical and horizontal direction is analyzed to find the threshold value for reducing the errors in distinguishing different areas. Then, the cumulative density value was analyzed to count the number of cars, and the parking is efficiently managed through detecting the available parking areas. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method is able to detect and count the cars in various kinds and sizes, the locations of parking areas, and even the vehicle areas in the areas for handicapped person, making it possible to automatically detect the parking areas.
