The main purpose of education is to provide the underprivileged with opportunities to be equal. As many students come from different backgrounds, it seems less likely to have the same learning experience. Consequently, students' levels are varied in a classroom. Taking this difference into consideration, the system of level-differentiated classes has been implemented to reduce the gap between able and less able students since 2004. To prove how effective the new system is, a lot of research has focused on its effects on either students' academic performance or affective aspects, but very few has done to see what is really happening in the level-differentiated class.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze teacher's questioning patterns in level-differentiated classes. Teacher questions are of significance because they play a key role in creating interactive classroom environment as well as encouraging students' participation. To achieve this goal, Long and Sato's question types (1983) are used to analyze patterns of a teacher's questions and their characteristics. One teacher participated in this study and she taught different classes- beginners and advanced students.
The major findings of this study are the followings: in both classes the teacher asked questions in English more than those in Korean and the most common question type was display questions. However, she asked more questions and Korean questions in beginners' class than those in the advanced class. Another finding is that the teacher used display questions to check students' understanding of the textbook and to remind the students of previous lessons while referential questions were commonly used to motivate students and activate their background knowledge. Though both question types function similarly in two different level classes, how the teacher used them seemed to contribute to creating communicative classroom environment. Comprehension check questions were used to check if the students followed the class and understood the teacher's English utterances and were sometimes followed by display questions in Korean to double-check their knowledge. Confirmation check questions were used to give students a clue that their answers were incorrect and make students' incomprehensible English output comprehensible. Interestingly enough, clarification request questions were rarely used. It was because both students and the teacher shared the same language.
There seems to be several problems regarding teacher's questioning strategies. First, the teacher repeated the same English question rather than paraphrasing it when the students failed to understand her question. Another problem is that teacher's questioning strategies did not seem to be different in both levels. Third, the large proportion of teacher's questions was display question resulting in teacher-centered classroom.
It is important for teachers to realize the importance of teacher questions. Therefore, they should do their best to develop their own questioning strategies. This cannot be done without the government's support. High quality teacher training programs are in dire need of improving both teachers' English skills and questioning strategies. In addition, more research on teacher questions in secondary schools should be done to forge a theory-practice connection.
