The purpose of this study was to present convergent, divergent, and convergent-divergent questions using a fairy tales and determine how young children's creativity and language ability differed by the questioning types. For this purpose, the following questions were set:
Q1. How does young children's creativity differ by teachers' questioning types using a fairy tales? Q2. How does young children's language ability differ by teachers' questioning types using a fairy tales?
This study was conducted in a total of 60 five-year-old children—20 at K Kindergarten, 20 at S Kindergarten, and 20 at J Kindergarten—in Seoul. The mean age of the children was 5 years and 8 months at K and J Kindergartens and 5 years and 9 months at S Kindergarten; they formed homogeneous groups with similar home environments in terms of geographical, socio-cultural, and economic conditions. Jeon's (2001) Korean Figural Creativity Test for Young Children (KFCTYC) was used to measure young children's creativity; Jang's (1981) language ability test for young children, which had been applied by Gwon (2007), Kim (2006), and Chae and Ji (2010) and finally adapted by Choi (2011), was used to measure their language ability. Preliminary test was performed, followed by pretest, 8-week experimental treatment, and posttest. For experimental treatment, a fairy tales was read to the convergent question group, the divergent question group, and the convergent-divergent question group, followed by interaction using each type of questions based on the contents of the story, in a book room on a weekly basis during the class of free choice activities. Pretest and posttest were performed to see the differences in young children's creativity and language ability by questioning types; statistical analysis was carried out using an SPSS WIN 22.0 program. This study obtained the following results: First, as for the differences in young children's creativity by teachers' questioning types using a fairy tales, giving either divergent questions or both convergent and divergent questions was more effective in improving children's creativity than giving convergent questions alone. Second, as for the differences in young children's language ability by teachers' questioning types using a fairy tales, giving either divergent questions or both convergent and divergent questions was more effective in improving children's language ability than giving convergent questions alone. These results imply that as for the differences in young children's creativity and language ability by teachers' questioning types using a fairy tales, giving either divergent questions or both convergent and divergent questions is more effective in improving children's creativity and language ability than giving convergent questions alone. It is therefore necessary for teachers to use divergent questions actively rather than convergent ones; in particular, they need to give both convergent and divergent questions and introduce and utilize a systematic teaching-learning method applying specific questions based on those types with the objective of contributing to young children's development.
