This study mainly analyzes Korean orchestral music employing shamanist rhythm of some works of Kim Daeseong who is actively working on composition, among shamanist music which is not known well because of its complicated and difficult rhythm. We examined how shamanist rhythm is expressed in modern creative music mainly on 3 of his songs, , and which uses exorcistic rhythm more efficiently than his other pieces. - The orchestral music, uses Seonburi rhythm which is Ssicgimgooc (a shaman ritual for cleaning dead person’s soul) rhythm in Jin-do (province), Dosalpuli (casting out devils) rhythm which is Danggooc rhythm (ground exorcistic rhythm) in Gyeonggi province, Bongdongche rhythm, Gyeopmachigi rhythm, Neomgimchae rhythm and Dangak rhythm and the works are divided into each rhythm. In ‘Seonburi rhythm part,’ magnificent atmosphere is created by playing Seonburi rhythm, Ssicgimgooc rhythm in Jin-do (province) twice as slowly (♩=56) as the original tempo, ♩=100~120. ‘Dosalpuli rhythm part’ is played with Danggooc rhythm of Gyeonggi province of 2·2·2·2·2·2. However, we can see that the tune of drum (Janggo) changes depending on the melody. In ‘Bongdongche rhythm part,’ the original rhythm of quintuple time and small triple time is played with an accent on the quintuple time (♪♩) in orchestral music. In ‘Neomgimchae rhythm part,’ orchestral music accepts the role of Neomgimchae rhythm in Danggooc in Gyeonggi province to link the previous part and the next part. - In the orchestral music, , Pusal rhythm in Gyeonggi Seongjugooc (Seongju exorcism), Gwonseon rhythm, Jigapseongjae Garaejo rhythm in Gyeonggi Dodanggooc, Jiyeongheejae Garaejo rhythm, Cheongbae rhythm and etc. are used. In ‘Pusal rhythm part,’ 3/4 5 tunes of Janggo rhythm, Pusal rhythm's 15 time and small binary time are composed of 1 phrase in orchestral music. Also, various percussion instruments play Janggo rhythm section by section. In ‘Gwonseon rhythm part,’ many percussion instruments gradually fill the rhythms. When Janggo leads rhythm, drum, gong and triangle follow the rhythm. In shamanist music, when Garaejo rhythm gets faster, the tempo changes from octuple to quintuple time. This structure is also applied to ‘Jigapseongjae Garaejo rhythm part’ and ‘Jiyoungheejae Garaejo rhythm part’ in orchestral music. We can find that in ‘Cheongbae rhythm part,’ Cheongbae rhythm of 3·3·2 in Danggooc of Gyeonggi province changes into 2·2·2·2, 3·2·3 and etc. in orchestral music. - The orchestral music, employs Noraecgarak rhythm in Gyeonggi Seongjugooc, Jinshoe rhythm and Olimchaemoli rhythm. In ‘Gwonseon rhythm part,’ Gwonseon rhythm of 3·2·2·3 changes into 3·2·3·2 or 3·3·2·2 in orchestral music. We know that Mr. Kim made various attempts in ‘Noraecgarak (melody of songs) rhythm part,’ such as changing the original rhythm of 5·8·8·5·5 in Danggooc in Gyeonggi province into 5·8·8·5·8 by adding triple time, or into 5·8·5·8 by removing quintuple time in orchestal music. Also, in ‘Jinshoe rhythm part,’ Jinshoe rhythm in Danggooc in Gyeonggi province is accepted in orchestral music as it is and in ‘Olimchaemoli rhythm part,' original Olimchaemoli rhythm is used in orchestral music. Like this, by diversifying patterns (2·3·2·3, 3·2·3·2), the orchestral music makes similar impression with Yeolchae melody of Janggo played in shamanist music. As stated above, Kim Daeseong recreates traditional shamanist rhythm by using shamanist rhythm or percussion instruments as they are or transforming them and playing a variation according to the melody. We can find that he expresses sentiment of modern orchestral music with Korean traditional rhythm.
