π-Electron conjugated polymers have attracted considerable attention in the last few decades because of their electronic/physical properties and potential application in electronics devices. In particular, polypyrrole (PPy), which consists of five-membered heterocyclic rings, has attracted much attention because of its good electrical conductivity, redox properties, and environmental stability. Nano-structured conducting polymers are known to play important roles in opto-electronic devices, ranging from organic transistors and electronic flat panel displays to chemical sensors and artificial actuators, both as interconnecting and as active components. In this study, the structure and properties of the conductive ultrathin films prepared by self-assembling polypyrrole, PPy, which are grown on the substrate film under gas-phase are studied. Distinctive features of these conductive ultrathin films of p-doped conducting polymer include high electrical conductivity and their having various polycrystalline microstructures. The polypyrrole nanoscale films, having several crystalline morphologies, were successfully fabricated by a self-organizing technique of monomer, and their fine-pitched patterns can also be easily formed by microcontact printing, using selective self-assembling. Compared with traditional polymerization and film coating procedures, this process reduces the percolation threshold for electrical conductivity, increases the conductivity by several orders of magnitude, and simultaneously improves thermal stability and light transmittance. These conductive thin-films, possessing polycrystalline structures, have a very high conductivity and electron mobility and are capable of being applied to organic opto-electronic films for electrical devices such as the organic EL and semiconductor. Secondary, the nano-structured conducting polypyrrole and poly(N-methyl pyrrole) were successfully synthesized by simply adding monomers into a magnetic ionic liquid, [Bmim]FeCl₄. In this process, self-organized conducting polymer nanostructures such as particles and tubes were formed without and with magnetic field. The shape of polypyrrole nano-particles synthesized at room temperature was almost spherical with their size ranged around 60 nm with a relatively narrow size distribution. The conductivity of pelletized particles was 10^(1-2) S/cm. From the N-methylpyrrole monomer, more attractive nano-structured polymers were obtained. Tubes with nano-scaled inner holes and walls were synthesized using a self-assembly process for the first time. The self-assembled local structures in the solvent ionic liquid are likely to serve as templates of highly organized nano-structured polymers. External magnetic field seems to affect these local structures and hence the resultant polymer nano-structures. This research provides a new method to synthesize various nano-sized conducting polymeric materials via simple self-assembly.
