In the academic year 2006, 29.8% of all high schools nationwide (637 out of 2,140 schools) was offering 'Ecology & Environment' course. It is, however, a mandatory elective in Gyeonggi-do. Current classroom situation of this course was evaluated in December, 2006, for 12th graders in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, through interviews and a questionaire on knowledge, attitude, application of student's life, and teaching method. In Suwon, 22 among 27 general high schools (82%) were offering 'Ecology & Environment'. Of all the high school teachers who taught 'Ecology & Environment' nationwide during the 7 years from 2000 to 2006, those who majored in environmental education was no more than 3.2%. In Suwon, however, 8 out of the 22 high schools which offered 'Ecology & Environment' had 11 teachers who majored in environmental education. Below are the results of a survey conducted of 210 students in the 12th grade from 12 schools who have studied 'Ecology and Environment' in Suwon in the year 2006. The results of questions regarding the students' general knowledge, attitude, application of the environment were out of a total 5 points, application 3.40 points, knowledge 3.28 points, and attitude 3.11 points. The most used teaching methods in 'Ecology and Environment' were in order: audio-visual aids, current events materials, case studies, discussion, task-based learning, experimental learning, field method and field trips. The development of students' knowledge, attitude, application of the environment through listening to 'Ecology and Environment' were knowledge 2.74 points, attitude 2.81 points, application 2.49 points showing comparatively low scores. The scores of questions regarding the differential aspects of the class compared to other subjects, the usefulness in entering university were 2.71 and 2.46 points respectively, which was also comparatively low. However, the question regarding the need for environment education in schools was 3.63 points which shows that although the class is not satisfactory now, students still feel the need for environment education in schools. There was a noticeable difference in the teaching methods and the results of students' evaluation of the course between teachers who majored in environment education and teachers who did not. The teaching methods of teachers who majored in environment education involved the active use of audio-visual aids, current events materials, discussions, case studies, task-based learning, field method and field trips and experimental learning compared to non-major teachers. In the results of students' evaluation of the class, teachers who majored in environment education achieved more positive results than the non-major teacher in all of these aspects: the amount of knowledge acquired through environment education, the amount of interest, the amount of application, thoughts on the need for environment education in schools, the differential aspects of the class compared to other subjects, the usefulness in entering university. In the results of teaching methods and students' evaluation of course according to humanities and natural science departments, teaching methods differed only in the use of audio-visual aids and task-based learning in that the natural science department used these methods more actively. In the students' evaluation of 'Ecology and Environment', the natural science department showed noticeably higher scores in the questions regarding amount of application, the differential aspects of the 'Ecology and Environment' compared to other subjects and the usefulness in entering university. In the Gyeonggi-do, 'Ecology and Environment' is an elective subject assigned by the province which makes it the same as a required subject. However, students learn it in the 12th grade of high school, which makes it difficult to teach and learn due to the education system focused on college entrance examination. Below are some suggestions to help alleviate these problems. First, 'Ecology and Environment' should be offered, rather than in the 12th grade, in the 10th or 11th grade when students have less burden of entrance examination. Better yet, it should be offered in the 7th to 9th grade (that is, junior high school) as a required subject. The more certain and fast method for effective environment education is to legislate environmental education statutes. At present the Ministry of Environment is making efforts to do so. Second, teaching methods and evaluation of teachers were better for teachers who majored in environmental education. Thus, high schools, private as well as public, should employ more teachers who majored in environmental education.
