In this study, carbon usage rate (CUR) was studied through conventional coagulation and enhanced coagulation using both virgin and reactivated carbon. Additionally, the effects of physicochemical changes caused by reactivation on adsorption of NOM, and 2-MIB and geosmin were evaluated. The treated water volume on activated carbon adsorber after enhanced coagulation was 3.5 to 4 times and CUR was two times more than after conventional coagulation. Solid Phase Concentration (SPC), which expresses the concentration of NOM on the activated carbon analysis, showed that initial breakthrough of 2-MIB was detected at 24.4mg/g and 17.2 to 20.2mg/g of SPC for the virgin carbon and the reactivated carbon after the conventional coagulation, respectively. However, initial breakthrough of 2-MIB was detected at 29.5mg/g and 19.8 to 22.7mg/g of SPC for the virgin carbon and the reactivated carbon after the enhanced coagulation, respectively. The initial breakthrough of geosmin showed very similar results except higher SPC for all carbons. The virgin carbon showed 21 to 31% higher SPC till the initial breakthrough of 2-MIB and geosmin than the reactivated carbon. It resulted from the decrease in small- and middle-sized molecules after the enhanced coagulation and 10% decrease in the volume of micropores(Vmic) after the reactivation. The main hindering was caused by MW range from300 to 2,000Da of NOM for the adsorption of 2-MIB. Functional groups of the activated carbon consisted of phenolic, alcohol, carbonyl and carboxyl. After the reactivation, changes in these functional groups were negligible. However, repetitive processes of reactivation increased the amount of oxygen on the surface of the activated carbon. Therefore, low molecular weight molecules in water and volume of the micropores in the activated carbon were important variables in adsorption of 2-MIB and geosmin. The quantitative evaluation of correlation between SPCs and initial breakthrough of 2-MIB and geosmin would provide optimum design and operation of activated carbons adsorber with the fundamental understanding.
