GAC (Granular activated carbon) has been used extensively to remove various organic micropollutants including taste and odor causing compounds in potable water. Its porous structure is ideal for adsorbing small and nonpolar chemicals. Practical experience has shown that the increased number of microorganisms in activated carbon filters improved the removal capacity for organic compounds. But the use of GAC in current water treatment processes as a further treatment step for the removal of organic containments has become a focus of attention owing to the increase in the number of particles, for example microorganisms, turbidity, carbon particles in its effluent. Therefore, it needs to have appropriate operation parameters such as water quality (TOC, attached bacteria, turbidity, particulate materials, and T&O) and physical properties of GAC (surface area, pore volume, pore size, iodine number, hardness, accumulated minerals, ash, and packing density) for optimization of GAC process. Granular activated carbon has a finite capacity for adsorption. Once exhausted of their adsorption capacity, spent GAC can be replaced or thermally reactivated for reuse. Therefore, operational parameters of the system are required for replacement or reactivation of the spent GAC. Generally, the thermal regeneration of spent GAC has become widely adopted as it's the most cost-effective regeneration method. To purpose of the study is to decide appropriate operational parameters and effective regeneration method that may be associated with GAC process. The study was performed through was a comprehensive pilot-scale operation at the G Water Treatment Plant in Seoul. Bacteria attached to the surface of GAC increased gradually with treatment process from 0.4×106 ~ 8.5×106 CFU/g. TOC removal was enhanced due to growth of the attached bacteria on GAC. Bacterial growth and maintenance was responsible for approximately 20 % of the TOC removal on GAC under the conditions of the study. It was found that TOC removal was closely related with biological parameters including the number of attached bacteria. The bacterial community attached to granular activated carbon (GAC) could be dettached to increase particle counts and increase chlorine consumption for disinfection. When the washed and the attached cells were disinfected with 1.0 mg/L of chlorine for 1 hour, the washed cells could be inactivated while the attached cell could not. The results showed that bacteria attached to carbon particle were highly resistant to chlorination. Also the results suggested a possibility that the treatment and disinfection barriers can be penetrated and pathogenic bacteria may break into the drinking water supplying system. To reduce particle breakthrough with bacteria colony from GAC filter, GAC/sand might be also considered. The results of the study showed that GAC/sand process was more effective than GAC process for particle removal. Especially, stabilization time for effluent particle counts of GAC/sand was a half of that of the GAC process right after backwashing. In the study, changes in physical parameters such as pore volume distribution and specific surface area of GAC with time were investigated. The pore volume of the used GAC decreased to the level below 0.6 cc/g while that of the brand new GAC was ranged 0.7~ 0.9 cc/g. The specific surface area of GAC pores changed within the range between 1100 ~ 1200 m2/g and 700 ~ 800 m2/g. Also It was shown that TOC removal was closely related with these physical parameters (R2 = 0.79 ~ 0.83) linearly under the conditions tested in the study. Therefore, the used GAC need to be replaced with new one or re-generated to remove organic matters (TOC) effectively from the finished drinking water. The physical properties of the reactivated carbon such as pore size and pore volume with temperature and steam dosage, were investigated. The change of the physical properties were related with adsorption capacity for 2-MIB. The volume of mesopores of the reactivated GAC was higher than that of the virgin GAC. In addition, the reactivated GAC had larger surface area (20 Å~ 500 Å) than that of the virgin GAC. The pore volume and surface area of reactivated GAC were increased by the steam dosage from 0.5 g to 1.0 g. The reactivated GAC pores had been widened through the reactivation process, resulting in a decreased micropore volume and increased mesopore volume. The cumulative pore volume of the reactivated GAC with 1.0 g steam were increased more than that of the reactivated GAC with 0.5 g steam at the same temperature. Rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) were employed to evaluate the efficiency of removal of 2-MIB in the filtered water using the reactivated GAC after 5 years of use. The results showed that the reactivated GAC had lots of mesopores at high temperature with steam (900 °C, 1.0 g H2O/g GAC) and was very efficient in removing 2-MIB. The virgin and the reactivated GACs were tested using the RSSCT with the filtered water spiked with 90 ~ 130 ng/L of 2-MIB. The reactivated GACs achieved 50~70 % 2-MIB removal rates which was comparable to that of the virgin GAC. Although the 2-MIB removal performance of the reactivated GAC was similar to that of the virgin GAC within 170 days, the physical properties of the reactivated GAC was improved more than those of the virgin GAC (F-400). As a results, total pore volume and 2-MIB adsorption performance of the reactivated GAC were increased by reactivation process at high temperature with steam. Acid washing before thermal treatment could improve the efficiency of regeneration process for activated carbon. During G pilot plant was operated, metal accumulation has become increasingly important because accumulated metal affected the thermal reactivation of GAC significantly. Calcium is more important because it had the greatest deleterious effect on GAC during reactivation and subsequent reuse. The results showed that acid washed GAC before regeneration of GAC achieved 58 % Calcium removal from the spent GAC.
