It is more likely that the students in academic high schools choose their courses for university depending on their academic ability rather than their interest in a particular field of study. Those who have good grades in languages generally choose the humanities and social science while those in mathematics choose the field of general science. Even some students who choose their courses based on their aptitude and interest apply to the university or department according to their grades in the College Scholastic Ability Test. This phenomenon seems to be co-related to the lack of students' and parents' concepts about courses for college, the poor career counselling in schools and the academic cliquism deeply rooted in our society. This study aspires to examine the causes of these problems and their solutions by presenting a questionnaire survey and an inquiry survey to the students and their teachers. The purposes of the questionnaire survey is to grasp the differences in the career counselling given to male and female students in academic high schools, to explore the problems of career education, and to analyze the teachers' awareness of the given career counselling. The inquiry survey was conducted to show the requirements of career education and its desired improvements. The results are as follows: (1) Though the male students make the best use of the Internet while deciding their courses, they have limits in processing information. (2) Students lack confidence because of the shortage of information about different courses. (3) Students want to know their aptitude through on-the-job training. These findings suggest that the technology helping students analyze and process lots of information is compelling and systematic counselling is required for students to choose their courses depending on their correct professional consciousness, not on their academic achievements. The development and distribution of materials for career education is urgent and putting the subject of career education and securing necessary teaching hours for it in a regular curriculum is necessary. Some suggestions for the improvements in career education are as follows: (1) Well-trained and knowledgeable counselors should be put in counseling offices. (2) Simplified and systematic career education should come into operation. (3) The office of education and schools should closely cooperate in order to provide students with a variety of information about the courses. (4) Teachers in charge of the subject of career education should be trained and appointed. (5) Effective materials, which are accessible to all students, related to the courses, should be developed and distributed. In conclusion, parents, teachers and students have to closely work together to make desirable career decisions, and career education should be improved for each student to be given an opportunity of self-discovery. Teachers also have to develop educational paradigms to obtain professional knowledge about career education.
