People often imagine themselves, in idealized ways, confidently speaking to a deeply moved audience. But, this is just a dream. In reality, those who have to make speeches in public are almost always nervous because of tensions and fears about their speech. They feel uneasy in because of their situation, and this prevents them from presenting a good, communicative speech. Therefore, in Korean education, it is necessary to teach students enthusiastically in class. The Korean teacher should be concerned about their student's anxieties with regard to public speaking. For this reason, in my study, after I investigated the theoretical background behind public speaking phobias, (concepts, types of fears, symptoms and causes) I grasped the crux of Middle Schooler's actual fears, through conducting a survey and observing their teachers. By analyzing the results, I figured out ways to reduce the tension felt by students while giving speeches. After that, I applied the methods to classes and observed the results. Public speaking phobia encompasses the fear, concern, trouble, shyness, and so on, which students are conscious of when they express their thoughts and feelings through articulate speech or even body language. There are two types of public speaking phobia. One is a characteristic innate phobia, and the other a circumstantial uneasiness. These two factors interact with and affect each other. The symptoms of public speaking phobia are both physical and psychological, and can present as rapid eye movement, blushing, noticeably diminished confidence, or nervous speech. These symptoms are formed from the composite causes mentioned above. The method for relieving speech anxiety is designed as a three-stepped activity. In the Pre-Step, the teacher forms groups, encourages intimacy and rapport among students in each group and has the activity of 'forming groups, introducing oneself, encouragement each other' prior to the Mid-Step. In the Mid-Step, the students learn the concepts of public-speaking phobias, embrace positive thoughts about themselves and their presentations, learn methods for relaxing tension, strategies for the presentation itself, and finally practice the presentation by preparing their speech elements. Students work also work on the following : understanding public speaking phobias, discussing their thoughts, objectifying their thoughts and voices, breath-control exercises, muscle relaxation exercises, and practicing the phonetic elements of speech. In the Last-Step, the students deliver a prepared speech in front of the whole student body, making a genuine 'presentation‘. In order to know the results of applying this plan to the class, I surveyed the students, required students to write down their impressions, and observed the students presenting their speeches. The results of the survey showed that students got positive effects from most of the activities, but, although a friend's reassurances was somewhat helpful, it was not effective in directly reducing tension felt while speaking in public. According to their written impressions, the students were able to transform their negative anticipations regarding their presentations in a positive and self-confident way. As a result of the teacher's observations, almost all the students felt diminished or entirely absent tension from their public speaking exercise. Through these activities, students can develop positive and rational thoughts about themselves and their presentations. They can also improve their self-confidence by making presentations. Making a presentation with self-confidence will give the presenter a sense of achievement, and the audience will feel more interested in the presentation. What is more, we can also expect that students who improve their presentation skills, through practice, will communicate with each other well and form harmonious human relationships.
