The present study aims to examine the effects of the music therapy program (e.g. singing, impromptu performance, physical expression, song writing) to reduce stresses of young children at kindergartens. From among 48 pre-school children aged below 5 enrolled in S Kindergarten in Iksan city, 28 were selected as subjects of this study after confirming their desire and consent to participate in the program. The subjects were divided into two groups, with 14 assigned to each group. The one is called experiment group (with 7 male and female members each who scored relatively high points at the stress test) to which music therapy program was applied, and the other is called control group (also assigned with 7 males and females each) members of which were given no music therapy. The experiment group underwent the 16-week music therapy session, with 50 minutes a week, while the control group was given none. Before and after the treatment, pre- and post-tests were conducted for each group. The statistic package program of SPSS/PC 11.5 version was employed to process the data acquired from the tests and T-test was performed to determine the difference between the two groups. The significance level for all data was set at .05 and .01 and the test paper of Parfenoff, USA (translated by Lee, Jeong Eun) was used for both groups to examine children's reaction to stresses. The findings of the study could be summed up as follows: First, the experiment group revealed a significant decrease in stress points compared to the control group; Second, the experiment group showed higher stability, a sub-item of stress, than the control group; Third, the experiment group improved peer relation more than the control group; Fourth, the experiment group featured improved relationship among family members compared to the control group; Fifth, the expectation level was improved in the experiment group more than the control group; Sixth, better behavior was shown by the experiment group in the kindergarten than by the control group; Seventh, bettered self-control was evidenced by the experiment group in comparison with the control group; Eighth, members of the experiment group turned out to be healthier than those of the control group; and Ninth, sense of responsibility became stronger in the experiment group than in the control group. The above results suggested definitely that the music therapy was effective in reducing the stresses of young children.
