The object of this research is to analyze the wastewater characteristics by year and its performance through investigation of the long-term data in municipal wastewater treatment plants for optimal design and operation. The evaluation of wastewater characteristics by sites, variation of effluent and removal in the facilities, influent loading, cost, and sludge quantity by each process and scale were also performed. We evaluated the design and performance of biological nutrients removal processes through comparison with that of conventional activated sludge process. Analysis of important operating factors on the performance based on application data of advanced wastewater treatment plants for proposal of optimal operating condition and process was also performed. The main results of this research are as follows; Actual management cost increased as the scale of wastewater treatment plants is small and A²/O processes was cheap, because the periodical cost such as personnel expenses and electric power cost are required basically regardless of scale of the plants. Management cost in the facilities would be going up due to the increase in the quantity of yearing sludge production rate and increase of treatment cost of land disposal and incineration since the ocean disposal is prohibited from 2008. Therefore, selection of optimal process satisfying higher performance and lower expenses is needed, because the scale of new wastewater treatment plants is small and medium sized. When wastewater treatment plants are being installed, the process satisfying higher nitrogen removal at lower C/N ratio must be selected. However, appropriate measure and application of optimal advanced wastewater treatment technology are additionally needed, because sewer maintenance and high strength wastewater by direct input of human waste are progressing. Average effluent TP concentration was 1.0mg/L in about 60% of advanced wastewater treatment facilities operated in Korea. Whereas, the concentration was lower than effluent criteria of TP concentration of 2.0mg/L. Thus, effluent criteria for TP phosphorus which can be easily removed by physical filtration or chemical treatment and lower than nitrogen in effluent should be reset for actual eutrophication control and water reuse. Higher removal of BOD of 95.1% and SS of 92.9% could be achieved at HRTs of 9~14h, and both TN and TP removals were 55.8% and 62.9% at HRTs of 9~14h in A²/O type processes, respectively. Whereas, removals of BOD and SS were 95.2% and 94.6% even at longer HRTs above 20h in SBR type processes. Both removals of TN and TP were 66.4% and 67.2% at HRTs of about 20h. Whereas, higher BOD and SS removals could be achieved regardless of HRT in media type processes, and TN and TP removal were 55.8% and 67.6% at HRTs 8~10h, respectively. As HRT became longer, removals of TN and TP also rapidly decreased. Higher simultaneous removal of BOD, TN, and TP could be achieved at MLSS concentration of 3,000~4,000mg/L in A²/O and SBR type processes, and MLSS concentration of 2,500~3,500mg/L in media type processes. Optimal SRT was 10d in A²/O and media type processes, whereas optimal SRT ranges was above 15d in SBR type processes. Effect of influent C/N(BOD/TP) ratio on nitrogen removal was most higher in A²/O type processes, and effect of influent C/P(BOD/TP) ratio on nitrogen removal was most higher in SBR type. F/M ratio above 0.1kgBOD/kgMLSS/d was needed for higher BOD removal in A²/O type processes, optimal ranges for effective TN and TP removals was above 0.1~0.2kgBOD/kgMLSS/d. Comparable removals of BOD, TN, and TP could be performed at lower F/M ratio in SBR type processes, F/M ratio above 0.1kgBOD/kgMLSS/d for BOD removal and above 0.2kgBOD/kgMLSS/d for simultaneous removal TN and TP were needed in media type processes. SBR type processes had many advantages at the condition with fluctuation of influent quality and flow rate. Whereas A²/O and media type processes could be applied regardless of scale of wastewater treatment plants, and would be more economical process than SBR process by shorter HRT.
