Abstract In the production of ceramics, obtaining the true red color from the oxide system has not been an easy matter. Due to this difficulty, colors such as pink, purple, brick red, and maroon shades substitute much of the red tones in a number of different applications.1) In traditional porcelain wares, copper red glazes were used to achieve a deep red tone but there are drawbacks in this as color development is unreliable due to the volatility of copper oxide that causes the glaze to become most sensitive to the temperature and atmosphere. Therefore, obtaining the pink-red color in highly-fired ceramics is difficult due to the color instability, yet because of the brilliance and attraction of this color for decorative purposes, there is a great demand in finding a method that would produce a consistent pink-red. Cr2O3 as a cromophore yields various colorations: pink, red, reddish brown or green.2) When Cr2O3 is used together with SnO2 and CaO in glazes, the pink-red colors are reliably sustained even at high temperatures. Depending on the quantity of added colorants, cinnabar can be substituted and the development of a stable deep purple color is possible. Consequently, it has been proven that colors ranging from purple to pink-red can be achieved by adding both Cr2O3 and SnO2. in a glaze. The research show that it is the result of the two main crystalline structures cassiterite (SnO2) and malayaite (CaSnSiO5)3) and the effect of Cr2O3. This research examines Cr2O3 in producing the pink-red color. It studies the formation of cassiterite and malayaite crystallites, the primary factors in producing the pink-red color, in relation to the application of Cr2O3 to examine its coloring mechanism. In addition, the research intends to identify the optimum synthesizing temperature and maintaining time for crystallization of malayaite, a stable pink-red colorization factor in high temperature glaze during Cr2O5-SnO2-CaO-SiO2 family pigment synthesis. Malayaite crystal is highly affected by the synthesizing temperature, maintaining time and contents of substituting chromium. The crystal phases formed at different temperatures exhibits various color and structure. The optimum temperature and period for pigment synthesis are suggested at 1300℃ for 2 hours. The result of Sn-Cr substitution measurement through fractionized synthesis indicates that the optimum Cr2O3 substitution amount for pink colorization is 0.01 mole, with maximum amount at 0.02 mole. Most Cr2O3 used for malayaite crystallization exists in both oxidation states, Cr(Ⅲ) and Cr(Ⅳ). The oxidation state of Cr ion, a significant factor of colorization, changes as the synthesis temperate increases. 3) While Cr2O3 has melting point above 1800℃, CrCl3 has a much lower melting point of 1150℃. As a result, when Cr ion used for colorization is substituted with CrCl3, a pigment using CrCl3 synthesize at lower temperature and changes in Cr ion’s oxidation status were observed. Particularly, when CrCl3 was used in conjunction with a mineralizer, malayaite was formed at low temperate (1200℃) and colorization agent Cr(IV) state was used to catalyze malayaite crystallization. However, the substitution decreased the effect of usage for cassiterite crystallization, indicating that most of Cr ions are used for malayaite. As a colorization agent, CrCl3 is found to be very effective, but only at a very specific condition due to its unstable nature per synthesis temperature and time. Also, when synthesis was maintained at lower 900℃ for 3 hours to increase the usage of malayaite and CrCl3, Cr ion usage during malayaite formation increased. Due to the influence of Cr(IV) used for malayaite, much darker and red colorization was observed. When relatively stable Cr2O3 was used for pigment synthesis with Borax and Li2CO3 as mineralizer, Cr(IV) usage during malayaite can be catalyzed without usage of CrCl3. Using a variety of mineralizer effectively enables synthesis of pigments with more red color with stable Cr2O3, instead of CrCl3.
