The elementary school music class guidance which applies a Multiple Intelligences theory : 4 grade students in the object원문보기

Howard Gardner, a developmental psychologist, introduced multiple intelligences required when human beings perform their cultural activities. However, the theory of multiple intelligences indicated that there is a limit to both the traditional theory of intelligence and the standard intelligence test that human intelligence is measured by arithmetic numbers. Multiple intelligences emphasized that all human beings own various kinds of intelligence and each of them has independence and equality. All human beings have eight specific intelligences. Since each intelligence is independent, only one area of intelligence shown high value does not say that the other areas of the intelligence are also high. The theory also indicates that intelligence is not fixed but developed by education methods. Thus, multiple intelligences suggest that schools should offer good educational environment for each student to find their real abilities and show the talents as much as possible. This should be applied to schools in Korea where students who are superior at linguistic and arithmetic abilities are respected but the others who are good at other abilities are easy to be ignored. If the classes are designed for each student to perform activities that matched to individual study styles, all the students can easy to achieve their study goals. In this aspect, the characteristics and theoretical background of multiple intelligences suggest that the groundwork of class design should be followed by individual styles of students. This study was focused on the music listening class for the fourth grade of elementary school students to help them be interested in music, understand it and progress in musical thought like musicians. Based on the theory of H. Gardner, the classroom strategy of T. Armstrong and the portfolio process evaluation of E. Winner were applied to the music class. First, this study reviewed the theory of multiple intelligences: concepts and characteristics, each area, and educational significance. Second, T. Armstrong's multiple intelligences in the classroom was studied. Also, in order to build the theoretical basis of music listening class, this study reviewed Arts PROPEL, developed by Project Zero, a art program related to the multiple intelligences, E. Winner's portfolio process, and other teaching methods for understanding of the music. Finally, this study suggested teaching and studying methods that multiple intelligences were applied to the music listening area for fourth graders. Using three pieces of music for the class based on the Armstrong's theory, E. Winner's portfolio process evaluation system was applied to the real class plan. For more learning effects of music classes, it is considered that the theory of multiple intelligences is required to the music class to make educational condition that can not only develop incorporated class plans and activities by coordination of study themes but also improve the quality of music teachers.
