The purpose of this study was to raise awareness of the importance of classification for children's books, to analyze problems with the current classifications, to seek out workable reform measures and to suggest a specific classification for children's libraries(Abridged KDC), as children's libraries have gradually grown in our country. The selected classifications to be analyzed were KDC 4 classification, Neutinamu classification, Parangsae classification, the classification of Dream Children's Library located in Daejodong and that of Chamdokebi Children's Library. The Neutinamu classification and Parangsae classification were compared in terms of Yu-Gang-Mok(類綱目) based on KDC 4 to find out their problems and present feasible reform measures.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, KDC 4 didn't deal with all the genres of children's books, and just classified Japanese fairy tales(833.8) among foreign literature genres. To remedy the problem, a revision of KDC 4 was required.
Second, many of the KDC 4 classification terms were technical or Sino- Korean words that were difficult to understand, and it's consequently not advisable to apply that to children's libraries without any modification. To improve the situations, the KDC 4 terms should be replaced with another words that are easy for children to understand.
Third, there were no explicit classification criteria for different age groups of readers and for each genre of children's books. To turn around the situation, distinctive classification criteria should be prepared by age and genre.
Fourth, given the characteristics of children's libraries, the Neutinamu classification modified the KDC 4 to make it easier to understand, but the KDC 4 was modified just in part, which resulted in detracting from the consistency of the classification system. To iron out the problem, the same terms should be employed in KDC 4 and the classifications of children's libraries.
Fifth, the Parangsae classification incorporated the pure science and technical science of the KDC into natural science, but that didn't deal with most of the subcategories of technical science. To tackle this problem, a simplified KDC or a separate classification for children's library should be prepared, and the subcategories should be included as well in consideration of the characteristics of children's books.
Sixth, Dream Children's Library in Daejodong adopted the publishing company sign system, and books written by the same writers were separately placed. To remedy the situation, particular regulations should be laid out not to throw readers into confusion.
Seventh, Chamdokebi Children's Library classified books by age and put books intended for a particular age group on the same shelf, which makes it difficult to arrange a large quantity of books. To resolve this problem, more evident classification criteria for different age groups and each genre of children's books should be selected, and age-based classification should be applied instead of classifying books by book shelf.
