The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the kinematics and muscle activities and plantar foot pressure during level walking and stairs and ramp ascending in elderly people. Fifteen young adult and fourteen healthy old adults were recruited to walk. Kinematic variable was measured by Vicon system(Oxford Metrics, Oxford, England) and muscle activity was measured by MP150 system(BIOPAC System Inc., Santa Barbara, U.S.A) and plantar foot pressure was measured by MatScan system(Tekscan, USA). Statistical analysis was used One-way ANOVA to know difference among the facilities. The results were as follow: 1. In spatio-temporal parameter, cadence and step time was more decreased during ramp ascent in young adults and during stairs ascent in elderly people. Step length more decreased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly. Step width more increased during ramp ascent both young adults and elderly people. Stride length more decreased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly people. Stride time more increased during ramp ascent in young adults and during stairs ascent in elderly people. Walking speed more decreased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly people. 2. In sagittal plane, flexion of hip and knee joint generally more increased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly people. Flexion of ankle joint more increased during ramp ascent both young adults and elderly people. 3. In frontal plane, adduction and abduction of hip joint more changed during ramp ascent in young adults and during stairs ascent in elderly people. Varus of knee joint and inversion of ankle joint more increased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly people. 4. In horizontal plane, angle of hip joint is no difference with gait conditions both young adults and elderly people. Internal rotation of knee joint and external rotation of ankle joint more increased during stairs ascent both young adults and elderly people. 5. In stance phase, muscle activity of low extremity generally more increased during ramp ascent both young adults and elderly people. 6. In swing phase, muscle activity of low extremity generally more increased during stairs ascent in young adults. Rectus femoris, biceps femoris activity more increased during ramp ascent and tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius activity more increased during stairs ascent in elderly people. 7. In young adults, COP pathway during stairs ascent was little shorten and trended to abduct at forefoot. That of ramp ascent was also shorten but trend to adduct at forefoot and was marked until great toe. In elderly people, COP pathway during stairs ascent was more shorten and abducted and that of ramp ascent was unstable. 8. In young adults, maximum force of second metatarsal joint and heel was more decreased at ramp ascent. In the elderly people, that of first metatarsal joint increased at stair ascent decreased at ramp ascent. That of second metatarsal joint and heel was more decreased at ramp ascent. These results indicate that stair and ramp ascent is more difficult task than level walking in elderly people as well as young adults. Kinematic gait parameters in stairs and ramp ascent with a same inclination are more changed at stair ascent. Muscle activity and plantar maximum force are more changed at ramp ascent. In the future, we suggest that studies of stair and ramp gait pattern regarding ambulatory patient with disabilities be further studied and an appropriate stairs and ramp inclination will be indicated.
