ABSTRACT A Study on the Changes to the Behavior of Young Children in an Inclusive Class according to the Application of a Nature-Friendly Program Choi, Young Hea Dept. of Early Childhood Education Graduate School Duksung Women's University This study began with a question raised as to what would be the meaningful social integration between disabled young children and common young children since the government announcement(Act of Special Education for the Disabled, 2007) that required compulsory inclusive education at a general educational agency for young children in 2010. It's reported that the meaningful social integration in inclusive education involves social interactions and peer relationships between young children(Lee So-hyeon, 2004; Guralnick, Commor, Hammon, Gottman & Kimish, 1996; Odom & Brown, 1993). But there are obvious obstacles to the social interactions between young children in an inclusive classroom such as disabled young children's behavioral characteristics and common young children's negative perception of disabled young children. Those obstacles can make the inclusion of disabled young children into a regular classroom meaningless except for physical integration with no interactions. Thus there rises a need to develop a program that is applicable both to disabled and common young children in a regular classroom and causes behavioral changes to them for the sake of social interactions and social integration. In this study, nature was chosen as the field of education instead of the structural and restricted artificial environment for a program to induce social integration. According to the previous studies, nature allows young children to move and play freely in a vast space, brings about internal changes to them, encourages them to respect others in a community, and helps them develop a cooperative, considerate, and understanding attitude. Thus the study set out to devise a nature-friendly program, apply it to an inclusive classroom, and investigate its impacts on the behavioral changes of disabled and common young children and the social interactions between them. For those purposes, the two following research questions were set: Research Question 1: How can a nature-friendly educational program be made up for the children in an inclusive classroom? Research Question 2: What kind of behavioral changes and social interactions will be observed in the children that participate in a nature-friendly program in an inclusive classroom? The research findings for Research Question 1 were as follows: The nature-friendly program for the children in an inclusive classroom was made up to contain such elements as could help with their social integration, which means the goal and objective of the program should be helping them grow in harmony between body and soul in an appropriate natural environment and promoting voluntary social interactions and further social integration between disabled and common young children. Thus the educational contents were based on the inclusive education for each area of the kindergarten curriculum and the existing nature-friendly education. And special teaching strategies were applied that reflected the unique needs of disabled young children. The goals, contents, and teaching and learning methods of the program were defined by reviewing the related literature in the preparation process. The disabled and common young children were observed and the teachers were interviewed to review the validity of the content categories and the applicability of the program in the process of needs analysis. And the composition process involved specific activities, the teaching strategies that reflected the special needs of the children in an inclusive classroom, and consultation by experts on early childhood education and special education for young children to test the validity of the program's content system and activity organization. Those processes ultimately produced a program whose goal was to fulfill social integration between disabled and common young children in an inclusive classroom. Its educational contents include 'physical, social, emotional, verbal, and exploratory elements.' The teaching and learning methods were designed in a way that would encourage the participation of both disabled and common young children in the activities and reflect the special needs of disabled young children on the progress of the activities. The specific teaching strategies include simplification of activities, modeling, cooperating, previous experiences, utilization of preference, visual clues, and encouragement of participation. For evaluation purposes, the meanings and changes caused by the program were analyzed based on the results of participatory observation, in-depth interview, letters to the parents, educational plans, teachers' journals, daily educational evaluation forms, and a portfolio for young children. The developed program was applied to an inclusive classroom in order to examine the behavioral changes and social interactions of disabled and common young children. Total 52 participatory observations were made of three five-year-old young children with a disability and 27 five-year-old common young children at S Kindergarten, an inclusive educational agency in Seoul, three times a week over 19 weeks from March to July, 2007. Trying to reduce errors derived from data collection that relied solely upon on participatory observation, the triangulation by Denzin(1978) was used which included participatory observation, in-depth interview, and document gathering. The data collected from participatory observation and interviews were categorized and analyzed with the grounded theory by Strauss and Cobin(1998). And a case study was conducted by examining and interpreting the following research contents: The research findings for Research Question 1 were as follows: First, the nature-friendly program brought about many changes to the behavior of the disabled young children. One of the most remarkable behavioral changes among the disabled young children during the program was 'bright facial expressions.' One of the behavioral characteristics observed among disabled young children is no facial expression. Looking at the nature around and touching natural objects, however, they started to show their pleasant feelings on their faces. Another behavioral change involved 'expression of willingness.' As they wanted to participate in the program, they got to regulate their aggressive behavior. Their obsessive picky eating habits started to decrease once they had vegetables they harvested themselves. In addition, they expressed their curiosity about nature in words and took active part in the activities. Observing plants, insects, and other natural objects in the program, they also started to "exercise their potential." That is, they engaged in explorations driven by their curiosity about nature and creative plays with natural objects. And there was 'a huge reduction in strange actions,' which usually pose difficulties with integration among disabled young children. One of the conditions that make the integration of disabled young children into a regular educational agency for young children is their strange behavior. However, such strange actions as vehement rejection through senses, lack of verbal expression, withdrawal, and social insufficiency were treated as the disabled young children came to contact with nature repeatedly and had first-hand contacts and experiences of nature. Secondly, there were meaningful results with respect to the behavioral changes of common young children. In general, common young children reluctantly interact with disabled young children by the 'recommendation of the teachers.' But the program caused them 'to approach disabled young children in mob psychology.' Watching the disabled young children be in a dangerous situation or discover and observe something, a few disabled young children began to take interest in them. Soon the interest spread to a majority of the common young children. In the process, they showed 'willingness to approach the disabled young children but, at the same time, were afraid.' Entering the latter stage of the nature-friendly program, interactions became more frequent among the young children. Witnessing the activities of the disabled young children often, the common young children started to 'understand the actions of the disabled young children.' Those behavioral changes among the common young children were meaningful results that were part of the goals of inclusive education expected from an inclusive classroom. And finally, the nature-friendly program resulted in meaningful social interactions between the disabled and common young children. The initial action taken by the common young children in terms of social interaction was 'caring.' While they initiated interactions of caring through emotional and physical actions, the disabled young children began their social interactions by asking the common young children to play with them with natural objects. As the social interactions continued between them, 'play also continued based on the sense of identity between them.' Thus the nature-friendly program generated meaningful results to the social interactions between the disabled and common young children for the sake of social integration that's one of the goals of inclusive education.
