The purpose of the present study is to examine variables affecting the language abilities of 25~36.month.old toddlers at child care centers and to provide developmental milestones for toddlers’ language abilities. For this purpose, It were analyzed differences in toddlers’ language ability according to personal variables of toddlers, human variables of their mothers and teachers, and physical environment variables of home and child care center to literacy. Research questions for this study are as follows: 1. [Question 1] Is toddlers’ language ability different according to their personal variables? 2. [Question 2] Is toddlers’ language ability different according to their mothers' and teachers' variables? 3. [Question 3] Is toddlers’ language ability different according to their physical environment variables? To answer these questions, we conducted literature review, a preliminary survey, and the main survey. Test instruments were chosen to measure 25.36.month.old toddlers’ language ability, care personnel variables, and physical environment variables based on relevant researches, and revised and supplemented them for the purpose of this study. In the preliminary study, It were tested the reliability, and, validity of the instruments for measuring temperament, child rearing attitude, and home and classroom literacy environment. In addition, testers and observers were trained in order to test toddlers’ language abilities and to observe and assess the quality of teacher.toddler interaction and classroom literacy environment. In the main survey, 206 toddlers, 206 mothers and 38 class teachers were sampled to measure variables related to toddlers, mothers and teachers. Test instruments were Preschool Receptive Language Expressive Language Scale(PRES) developed by Kim Yeong.tae, Seong Tae.je and Lee Yoon.gyeong(2003), Toddler Temperament Scale(TTS) revised and supplemented by Baek Gyeong.sook(1996), Hong Gye.ok’s(1995) Iowa Parent Behavior Inventory(IPBI), the scale for teacher.infant interaction in Gang Sook.hyeon’s(1994) Assessment Profile for Early Childhood Program(APECP), Morrow’s(1997) Home Literacy Environment Scale(GPELH), and Classroom Literacy Environment Scale(CELE) developed by Morrow, Strickland and Woo(1998). The questionnaire was conducted from June 2 to August 31, 2007 with the toddlers’ mothers on toddler variables(gender, age, temperament type), maternal variables(age, academic qualification, employment status, monthly income, child rearing attitude) and physical environment variables(home literacy environment), and with the teachers on teacher variables (age, qualification, working experiences in child care center caring experience of toddler, toddler rearing experience of her own child). In addition, individual toddlers’ language ability was tested, and the quality of teacher.toddler interaction and classroom literacy environment based on observation were assessed using 5 point likert scale. The data were analized using SPSS 15.0. To answer [Question 1], [Question 2] and [Question 3], differences in toddlers’ language ability according to toddlers’ personal variables, maternal variables, teacherrelated variables and physical environment variables were examined through t.test, one.way ANOVA and Scheffe’s test. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, significant differences were observed according to gender(male, female), age (under 30months, 31.33, 34.36) and temperament type(easy, difficult, slow to warm up). That is, language skill was higher in female toddlers, older toddlers, and toddlers with temperament slow to warm up. Second, significant differences were observed according to maternal education(high school and under, university, graduate school) and monthly income(2,000 thousand won and under, 2,001~4,000 thousand won, 4,001 won and over), but not according to mother’s age and employment status. Mothers’ child rearing attitude was significantly different according to subfactors ‘rational guidance,’ ‘limit setting’ and ‘responsiveness.’ Toddlers’ language ability was significantly different according to teacher’s age(21.25 years, 26.30, 31.35, 36.40), experience in toddler class(1.2 years, 3.4, 5.6), and the quality of teacher.toddler interaction, but not according to qualification, working experience in child care center and caring experience of toddler. The quality of teacher.toddler interaction was significantly different according to sub.factors ‘positive interaction,’ ‘teacher’s verbal modeling,’ ‘social interaction promotion,’ ‘teacher’s positive attitude’ and ‘active participation in activities.’ Third, significant different were observed according to ‘literacy activity’ and ‘literacy modeling,’ but classroom literacy environment was not significantly different according to the sub.factors. In conclusion, toddlers’ language ability was partially different according to personal variables, mother.related variables, teacher.related variables, and physical environment variables. This shows that 25~36.month.old toddlers have verbal experiences and feedback through interaction with their parents and teachers, who are their major communication partners, and therefore their language ability is affected much more by human variables such as temperament type, mother’s child rearing attitude and interaction with the teacher, which have direct and indirect effects on their use of language, than by rich physical environment. The importance of temperament type and verbal interaction with the mother and the teacher during infancy when language abilities are acquired rapidly, this study provide important implications for improving and supporting theories on toddlers’ language abilities
